Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth cause a stir at Walmart in Cullman, Alabama

Ashton Warnke thought she recognized Miley Cyrus, but she wasn’t quite sure. After all, it was the Cullman Walmart in Alabama.

But after the young woman wearing the Atlanta Braves baseball cap turned to her boyfriend and spoke, both Ashton and her mother knew they were shopping next to the music superstar.



“We heard her accent and knew it must be her,” Warnke says of the unexpected sighting on Saturday.

The Warnkes were buying groceries on Saturday afternoon when they spotted the 17-year-old Cyrus and three other people, including actor Liam Hemsworth, her boyfriend.

“They were just looking at bathing suits,” Warnke says. “I walked up to her and said, ‘Excuse me, are you Miley Cyrus?’ She smiled and said yes, and I asked if we could get a picture. She smiled and let my mom take our picture.”

Though Warnke says “you could tell she didn’t want a lot of people to see she was there,” Cyrus smiled and was accommodating to those who realized who she was.

“They were just hanging out in Walmart like normal teenagers would be,” Warnke says of the Cyrus entourage. “Her boyfriend was videotaping her, and they were with another guy and girl. She was nice, but she just wanted to be a normal person and shop.”

Warnke says she doesn’t have any idea why Cyrus was in the Cullman Walmart, although she says rumors have been flying that Miley or her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, have a house on Smith Lake. “No one knows if it’s the truth,” Warnke says.

The 21-year-old Warnke, who works at Cullman Savings Bank, likes Cyrus’ music, but it’s her younger cousins, fans of Cyrus and her TV alter-ego Hannah Montana, who are really impressed.

“They were so excited,” she says. “They couldn’t wait to see the pictures.”
