The police in lirbrulville are fighting back.
« on: June 16, 2010, 01:43:03 PM »
When are young mouthy punk-ass kids gonna learn the just because you have a cell phone on video, don't mean you won't get punched in the mouth if you piss off the po-po? The man with the gun is in charge. I see the cop as the victim here. Resist arrest, get the horns....

Unfortunately, the talking shitbags playing the video have no idea what happened prior to the video and have no regard for the officer's well being. An outside individual stepped in and pushed the officer. That is assault. The last I heard, you assault an officer, you better get your money's worth. Cause that ass is gonna hurt eventually.

Seattle police guild defends officer's teen punch

Caught on Tape: Cop Punches Girl Play Video ABC News  – Caught on Tape: Cop Punches Girl
Wed Jun 16, 9:25 am ET

SEATTLE – The president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild says an officer was justified in punching a young woman who shoved him in a dispute over jaywalking.

Rich O'Neil told KCPQ-TV that punching her in the face was an appropriate use of force as the officer struggled with two women and a crowd formed. O'Neil says it's wrong to call the punch police brutality or racist.

Cell phone video shows Officer Ian P. Walsh trying to control two women Monday and punching a 17-year-old in the face.

Acting deputy police chief Nick Metz has said the women bear much of the responsibility for resisting arrest.

Seattle Urban League CEO James Kelly says the punch was an overreaction that brought to mind a video taken April 17 of two Seattle officers kicking a Hispanic suspect.

Police are conducting an internal investigation.

I'm sure the Police IAD in lirbrulville will find that this officer's action was not an appropriate "Measured Response" to being shoved...he'll have to do some Community Service and take a mandatory course in Conflict Management along with some self-flagellation.

Don't know what they'll find or rule.  I can tell you this, that no police training has punching in the face as part of the training and teaching curriculum.  I doubt that there's any policy in any police agency that suggests a punch in the face as a proper tactic for gaining control of a suspect.  I've seen the video.  It's not pretty.  Clearly the officer lost his cool.  The flip side of "mess with the cops, get the horn"...is that the cop who can't maintain his composure while doing his job might get the horn too.  This situation, IMO, based on the snippet of video I saw, was a clear cut case of justifiable use of force, and pepper spray, maybe even a taser might have been appropriate, but a punch in the face probably violates policy under these circumstances, or at the least was a response in anger, and not a needed to accomplish the mission at hand.

At about 1:15, the video says that Seattle police are authorized to use a punch if necessary. If you notice, the assailant was larger than the officer. Bottom line is shut your mouth and talk to the officer. From what is being reported, the officer wanted to talk to her about the jay-walking and she did not want to talk. Sounds like she should have talked and maybe her younger bigger cousin would have kept her hands to herself.

But hey, since there are those out there who think that an officer should not be allowed to punch you in the face, give it a shot. You may be right. Or you may just tote an ass-whooping. I prefer to answer questions rather than shove an officer of the law.

I certainly concur that acting calm, and answering questions is the best course.  I heard what was said on the video, but often such reports are inaccurate, and it must be a reasonable use of force.  Reasonable meaning the force necessary to effect a lawful arrest, or to stop an immient threat.  I watched the video, when the punch was thrown, the officer advanced on her (a 17 year old girl that was unarmed).  He clearly had cause to arrest based on their conduct, and cause to use the force needed to effect that arrest.  And if he had any training at all, then he could have used some PPCT (Pressure Point Control Tactics) moves, or even a strike more in line with normal police baton or ASP training.  (I don't know what they carry.)  A taser would have been perfectly acceptable, as would pepper spray.  Had the girl been advancing on him with a weapon, then clearly ANY strike would have been justified to save his own life or prevent serious bodily injury.  That wasn't the case.  Also, the video I've seen didn't show him arresting the girl he punched.  That's not good either.  If you have to use force on someone, you need to arrest them.  Maybe he did and that wasn't shown.  Under the circumstances, I doubt he gets fired, but he could be put through some remidial training, and from what I saw, that wouldn't be a bad idea.  You can rest assured a civil action is forthcoming, and the department's written policies regarding use of force, and his training will be scrutinized  heavily.

While I don't think we pay police to "entertain us", or to "project force" for the sake of showing how powerful they are with their badges and guns, a taser would have been much easier to justify here under most taser policies, and under the circumstances.   A really good "projection of force" is pulling out a taser with a strong commmand and warning.  Getting pissed and cold cocking a 17 year old girl probably isn't the best method.

I liked it. All yutes should be showed this video as a good "reason to shut the hell up". Did you notice the assailant was larger than the officer? And how many times have you been assailed by a larger person and stepped back to use your "alternate" methods of subduing someone? I think he should have called for backup and whipped everybody's ass.

Assailant?  Bigger?  She was an unruly 17 year old female that was, at most, an inch taller, and probably within 10 pounds one way or the other of the cop, supposedly a trained cop.  You don't think your sensationalizing and embellishing her, and her threat says anything about the situation?

As I said, clearly force was justified.  The chose method was questionable.  Not sure if you're aware of it, but police are not charged with the duty of "whipping ass", nor do I want them to be.  Maybe you do, but it's not in keeping with the Constitution, which you seem to really support by your support of these candidates who are pro Constitution.  Doubt seriously you really desire to live in a police state where cops get to dispense street justice.  You might think you do, but I don't think you really do.

There are times. This was one of them. I liked Rodney King's ass whooping too.

Had a couple of friends in high school. They were out drinking and stopped at a convenience store. Cops pulled up and smelled alcohol. Asked them to step  out of the truck. Asked them if they had any weapons. One of them pulled a .44 from under the seat and non-threateningly held it up and said, "you mean like this". And put back under the seat. They whipped both asses with billy clubs. The next day was pretty rough when they sobered up. They did not threaten anyone, but they acted in a way that deserved an ass whipping.

Sometimes an ass needs whipping. This girl needed whipping. When the cop came at her, she pushed him away again. Don't touch the officer. That is po-po 101 on da skreets. Who is our resident skreeter?

Let me first say, it's always easier to sit back and say how it should have been handled.  With that said.....

This officer just put his career on the line for a 17 year old jaywalker?  Really?  I don't think he was wrong in using force, but he should've had her on the ground and restrained long before cousin beefcake decided to act.  His problem was he was being a pussy (indecisive).  He knew he couldn't just let her resist and walk away, but he didn't really want to fight a female.  No law enforcement officer wants to be on the tv or in the paper for whipping some girl's ass.  It's just not cool.  Once he decided to use hands on though, he should have treated her like he would anyone else.  Put her on the ground with minimal force and restrain her.  THEN, deal with the beastly friend.

OR.......

He could have confronted the teens with a laid back approach and talked with the ladies about not jaywalking.  Most hostile situations can be controlled by the officers initial response.  If he comes up to them pointing and shouting, they are going to be defensive.  Then the situation will most likely take a course the officer doesn't want it to take.  It's much easier being laid back and giving warnings in bullshit situations like jaywalking.  No sense and getting all "I'm the fucking LAW!!!!" on a couple of teenage girls walking in the street.  I'm sure he's learned something from this situation.

Yep.  I've been in law enforcement for the last 17 years in one form or another.  Every dept. has them...the guys that are always having to fight, use force, spray people, taser folks, charge folks with resisting...the guys that can turn jaywalking in to a CNN Event.  And then you have the other 80%+ of the guys on the force that somehow manage to avoid all or most of these things for the majority if not all of their careers.   The majority of the guys that want to run around playin "John Law" usually manage to toe the line and are able to justify it.  A small minority manage, at some point, to lose their cool and over step their bounds, and get fired, or are constantly being reprimanded and sued.

Thanks, Counselor.  For the benefit of the jury, my post was made firmly as a tongue-in-cheek statement especially regarding the entertainment factor.

But...I do think that the officer should have used the taser...not just brandished it with a verbal command.

Now get the hell off of my lawn!

Surprised this wasn't posted yet.  Homewood PD apparently found some teens breaking into a vehicle and tased one.  The kid later died at UAB hospital.  I do not believe he was "tased to death", but the taser may have contributed to his demise.

Either way, no one should be fired or suspended without pay.  The Homewood PD shouldn't be responsible either.  Yeah, it sucks that the kid died, but it was his choice to commit a felony.  I'm not saying the consequence should be death, but we all face consequences for our actions.

Family should point the finger at the kid's parents instead of the Homewood PD.

Public canings would solve all of this shit. Until it was some black kid getting caned. Then we would hear all of the old tired slavery quotes.

Regardless of race, religion, or national origin, a lot of the crap the police have to put up with would diminish.

There was not much of an uproar when the white boy (Michael Fay) got caned in some Asian country (Singapore) a few years back.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.
