A More Appropriate Punishment for Cheating...
« on: June 10, 2010, 05:39:26 PM »
This from CFN:

Quote
You want to punish USC, NCAA? You want to do something with some teeth that will keep programs from cheating? Force the school to give back its share of 2004 bowl money, TV revenue, and the dough made from merchandise and ticket sales. Force USC to open the 2004 books, and whatever the football team brought in, that’s the fine. If the season didn’t happen and the wins are vacated, then so should the revenue made off of them.

I personally like the idea.  THAT is a real punishment.

Of course not - but it's still a good idea.

It is a great idea.

Along with...

- Pete Carroll is no longer allowed to coach in college athletics or be involved in any way, shape or form with any college athletics.
- All employees involved in "Lack of Institutional Control" must be relieved of their duties and never allowed to work on a college campus again. If this includes staff members that left USC before the sanctions were handed down, then so be it.

It's sad that the culprits get off without a single punishment.  You really think Pete Carroll cares?  I mean, I guess his legacy is tarnished and all.  But he's in the NFL now, and he has a boatload of money from working at USC.

Reggie Bush has a Super Bowl ring.

Who's really getting punished?  Lane Kiffin (I know, I know - fuck him) and the current players.

I know we like watching big time programs get crippled, but if we're talking fairness and justice, there should be no scholarship reductions.  No postseason bans.

Just vacate the wins and fire everyone involved and make it impossible to work for the school they love.

Exactly, it sux major monkey balls for all those kids and staff that did things the right way. I'm real curious to how much Kiffin did know about all this when he was there before. You're right though, Bush and Carroll couldn't give too poops about it. ESPN keeps showing statements from both but they have to at least know somewhat that the majority thinks they are full of poop.

I see where you're coming from, but I disagree.

I am bloodlusting. With every terrible thing I hear as part of USC's punishment, comes an evil cackle from me. I want MORE! After all the anguish they put me through from about 2002-2006, where ESPN couldn't get the Trojan's cock out of their mouths. From beating us twice when they shouldn't have (no one to blame there but our selves), to stealing the 04 championship from us, and the 04 Heisman from Cadillac (possibly), to all the fucking talk about how they could beat any NFL team and how they were the greatest college football team of all time, when I believe with all my heart that we were better than them in their "greatest of great years".

Punishing Carrol and Bush on top of everything else? I can deal with that. All though, Reggie's a Saint now, so I've learned to forgive him.

The main reason I'm ok with them raking the University over the coals, is that it actually serves as a deterrent from letting this happen again. If Carrol and Bush aren't going to feel even a million dollars stripped out of their account. It's not going to change recruiting practices in the future. This will make schools (I'm looking at Tuscaloosa), try to play by the rules, or fear getting royally fucked.

I was thinking stealing the 05 Heisman from Vince Young. That was a farce.

You're right. I forgot he got it in 05. Matt Leinart, who they also probably paid, got it in 04.

But you're letting your emotions dictate your judgment.  My point is that if the NCAA truly wants to punish a school for infractions, punish those involved.  It's impossible to do anything substantial to Carroll and Bush.  Therefore, you hit the school where it really hurts - the long term employees of that school.

If Mike Garrett couldn't keep track of agents, coaches, and players breaking the rules, then he should be banned for life.  If his secretary processed any paperwork or sent any emails or whatever, she should be banned for life.

If it's a booster problem or other recruiting problem, you make all recruiting go through the NCAA.  It's not like they don't have the money to send a small task force to live in L.A. for a few years.

If they cheated in order to ensure success on the field and in their pocket books, take the money back.  All of it.  Bankrupt their athletic department or make the boosters feel the pain of the punishment where it really hurts.

And I don't think this deters anyone from cheating.  Alabama was hammered for cheating and just a few years later, USC gets hammered.  They obviously didn't care about the NCAA flexing nuts in 2002.

Did Alabama really get hammered, though?

Alabama's punishment had me believing that the NCAA doesn't take anything seriously, and will offer no more than a slap on the wrist for any infraction.

This will hurt USC, and I love it. I think people will say "Shit, the NCAA took one of the most 'powerful' universities, and made them suck ass due to all the scholarships they lost."

I think some cheaters will think twice now.

I didn't meant the Textbook sanctions.  I meant 2002.

Do you think they were slapped on the wrist in 2002?

I'm torn...torn like an old sweater.  I've long since held that the punishments meted out by the NCAA are all out of whack and do more to punish the innocent than those who were involved.  Let's ASSUME (Although I know it's not the case) that the wrongdoing was fairly isolated to a handful of individuals..Bush, Carroll etc.  Obviously, those guys have skipped town for greener pastures.  Now, the current players, coaches and fans have to pay for their transgressions.  However, I also understand the premise of the penalties forcing the University to take stock in its own operation and clean it up to a point where they're squeaky clean from this point forward.

Another issue I have is the reduction of scholarships.  I would venture a guess that the majority of kids that receive D1 scholarships to play football or basketball, would not have the opportunity to go to college otherwise.  Why does the NCAA feel the need to take away the oportunity for 20-30 kids to college?  I'm more in the camp of hitting them in the pocketbook.  Hit them with HUGE fines in the multi-milion dollar range and have the NCAA use that money to provide scholarships around the country.

2002 was fair, but then after they were "Staring down the barrel of a gun" and were busted again under the repeat violator window, and indeed got a slap on the wrist, that's where the NCAA's lack of testicular fortitude was showing.

Meh. Poor kids. If they're that badass, they can get a scholarship somewhere else.

I would support them losing the scholarships, and having to pay the NCAA for academic scholarships to replace them. Now there's an idea.

I've never thought punishing the coaches and players that had nothing to do with it was fair.  A big hit in the pocket book all around, administration, coaches, etc...that would be fair.  But fair isn't part of the equation.

See, that's the problem.  You eliminate the scholarships..ie, opportunities for kids...but they don't replace them elsewhere.  The schollies are just gone, which makes no sense.  Paying the NCAA kwazillions in penalties, which in turn has to be used to provide opportunities elsewhere is the ticket.
