He was actually referring to his deck.  Sometimes the shrubbery will get real thick and overgrown around your deck and make it look smaller.  If you're having friends over, they like it better when you have a nice, big deck to sit on.  However, if the bush is really grown up around it, people will think your deck is really small.  Make sure you keep the shrubs trimmed really well around the base of your deck and it will give the appearance of a much larger deck than you really have.
