Former Auburn, NFL player Leonardo Carson asks for delay in drug sentencingMOBILE, Ala. -- Former Auburn and NFL lineman Leonardo Carson, who was scheduled to be sentenced on a drug conviction in federal court this afternoon, instead asked for a delay to find a new attorney.A jury in August convicted Carson -- a Prichard native and former Dallas Cowboy -- of four drug charges, including conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of powder cocaine.Carson's attorney Arthur Madden told U.S. District Judge Kristi DuBose that his client asked him to withdraw from the case.Carson, 33, told the judge that "the communication on this is blurred to me ... I would like to have more knowledge of what's going on."DuBose approved the request, but she told Carson that he won't find a lawyer who is better than Madden. She said she's never known Madden to withdraw from a case before, adding that "I think he's one of the finest attorneys in Mobile."DuBose ruled that Carson has two weeks to find a new lawyer or file a request for a court-appointed attorney.Carson was also convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of crack cocaine; conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana; and possession with intent to distribute crack. His sentencing was rescheduled for June 4. He faces as much as 10 years to life in prison.(For a complete report, read Friday's Press-Register.)
