Revisiting Auburn's 2005 signing class five years later

While it's easy for fans to get caught up in euphoria of a highly rated signing class, it's worth remembering that only a handful of the players in any given class will turn into stars.

Some will have productive careers. Some will leave school early due to injuries or academics. Some will never make it to campus.

Earlier this month, Huntsville Times sports writer Paul Gattis looked back at the 2005 signing class.

This class, signed on the heels of the 2004 undefeated season, has largely moved on. Redshirt seniors just completed their final year of eligibility in 2009. Only Aairon Savage, who has received a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA, will be around in 2010.

There were some hits and misses in this class. Some of the higher rated players were misses (see Tray Blackmon), while some of the success stories came from less-heralded players like Sen'Derrick Marks and Jerraud Powers.

Here's the fully tally. See how many names you remember five years later...

Ulysses Alexander: Receiver redshirted as a freshman, then transferred to Florida A&M.

Montez Billings: Caught 55 career passes but left the team before his senior season.

Tray Blackmon: Five-star signee at LB but never fulfilled promise amid injuries and suspensions; left team after junior season.

Antonio Coleman: Two-time All-SEC at DE, finished third in school history with 23.5 quarterback sacks.

Robert Dunn: Caught 44 passes and excelled as punt returner in four-year career.

Oscar Gonzalez: Seldom-used backup lineman as redshirt freshman, then transferred to Howard.

Mike Harness: Rated the nation's No. 2 center, attended prep school and never played at Auburn.

Alonzo Horton: Played in nine games as backup as redshirt freshman, then transferred to Jackson State.

Zach Kutch: Handled kickoffs part-time for two seasons, transferred to Illinois State and named first-team kicker in Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2009.

Sen'Derrick Marks: Three-year starter at DT, made 113 tackles before leaving after junior season for NFL.

Andrew McCain: Signed as a TE, became starter at tackle as a senior and played in 32 games in career.

Gabe McKenzie: Caught 13 passes as TE each of first two seasons, spent junior season at DE before not catching a pass as senior back at TE.

Walt McFadden: CB started final 25 games of career and named second-team All-SEC as senior.

Rudy Odom: Spent career as backup OL, appeared in two games.

Jerraud Powers: Intercepted six passes in starting 23 games at CB before leaving after junior season for NFL.Was on the Colts team that was just in the Super Bowl and was a big part of what defense they had - detail missing from original

Prechae Rodriguez: Junior college signee, caught 38 passes with TD receptions in three seasons as backup WR.

Aairon Savage: CB named All-Freshman SEC but missed last two seasons with knee injuries.

Rex Sharpe: Failed to qualify academically, went to junior college and spent two years as a backup at Minnesota.

Patrick Trahan: LB declared academically ineligible after his freshmen season, went to junior college and played the past two seasons at Ole Miss, finishing fourth on the Rebels with 69 tackles as a senior.

Tommy Trott: Two-year starter at TE who caught 45 career passes with four TD receptions.

Brian West: DT never played at Auburn before transferring to Houston in 2007.

Jonathan Wilhite: Junior college All-American, started 21 games in three-year career with 101 tackles and three interceptions.Plays for and often praised by Belichick which is saying something if you know football - detail missing from report
