The only thing that upsets me more than an officer being killed in the line of duty is the children he/she leaves behind. I know I'm biased here, but those children should have a college fund granted to them right now. Those kids will live their entire life without knowing their father. Not having their father there to send them to school on their first day. Not having their father to watch them at their first sporting event. Not having their father to watch them walk across the stage of their high school graduation or having their father standing beside them on their wedding day.

The absolute very least this country owes this officer, who gave his life in the line of duty, is the very best opportunity for his children to have successful lives. The very least this country owes the children of this fallen officer is the same free college education awarded to any poverty stricken child who is fed and clothed by the state because their sorry ass parents don't want to work for a living.

I would love to have an organization that does this, but I do not want to see public money for it. There are a lot of bad people in the world, and sometimes they are cops. If this is a government program, then it will cover everyone just like a union program. If this is a private org, then they can choose. I know we should be "thinking of the kids", but there are many men out there whose kids suffer due to the sins of the father.  Also, we have many soldiers who are in unfamiliar places fighting for people they have never met, and they do not have a program like this. So, I would love to see it, but for it to be a private org. the men who put their life on the line to keep us safe should get a few more benefits. It may be that if your father was killed int he line of duty, you get an extra bonus in qualifying for college aid regardless of your current income level. That, I think would be fair compared to the deadbeats that get free money for nothing. But I also thin this should be for all police and military.

I haven't policed in right about 10 years now, but it seems there are or were some benefits for children of slain police officers.  In AL there is no police union, so most are members of the FOP and/or the PBA which also has death benefits for the family in addition to any life insurance the officer had.

This group: http://www.nationalcops.org/ provides a range of services, including scholarships for families that have lost a loved one in the line of duty.  The site shows what the state benefits are, and I think there are federal benefits too.

The FOP and PBA are great organizations, no doubt.  There are programs out there, but they are not enough, in my opinion.  I know two people right now who had their husbands killed in the line of duty and neither have received a dime from anyone.  Both are fighting (with attorneys) to get funds from programs their husbands were paying weekly to be in.

And I agree, it should also include military.

I totally forgot - there is a private organization here in Houston called The 100 Club that does exactly that.  Covers firemen too.  You guys should start one in AL.  Bet if someone wrote them asking for organizational help, they would oblige.

http://www.the100club.org/home.html

Established in Houston, Texas in 1953, The 100 Club is a well-recognized organization within the communities it serves. The 100 Club began when 100 men, each contributing $100, wanted to help the families of Houston Police Officers who were killed in the line of duty.

The effort put forth by these men has developed into over a half century of support for law enforcement in not only Harris County, but seventeen surrounding counties – Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Burleson, Chambers, Colorado, Fayette, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Liberty, Madison, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Walker, Waller, and Washington counties. In October 2001, The 100 Club reached another milestone in its history by providing benefits to the dependents of Firefighters killed in the line of duty.

The continued growth of The 100 Club is only possible through its members and donations made from the community. Your membership helps The 100 Club continue to support the Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters that protect you.

Our local Nissan / Infiniti group is talking about holding a December fundraiser to donate to Officer Davis's Fund.

Hope we finish getting it organized.

There are people who own Nissan's and admit it?

And apparently must band together as a group for moral support too.
