Pelham Police officer shot and killed last night...

Quote
Pelham, Ala. - A Pelham police officer has died after being shot overnight.

The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was conducting a traffic stop along the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near milemarker 243.  The highway was shut down in both directions for several hours and remained close at the start of morning rush-hour.

Authorities removed the officer's patrol car from the side of the highway around 6:20 a.m. Friday.

Hoover Police took two people into custody in connection with the shooting around 1:30 Friday morning.  Authorities also found a suspect vehicle, a silver Acura TL, near 43rd Avenue North and Inglenook Street in Birmingham.

Pelham police say the white male taken into custody will be identified after formal charges have been fired.  Right now the shooting is being investigated as a murder of a police officer.

Lifesaver helicopter had been dispatched to the shooting scene in Pelham moments after the gunfire, but the officer was taken by ambulance to UAB hospital with a police escort.  Authorities confirmed shortly after 6:00 a.m. that the officer had died.

Right now, there is no word on the nature of the traffic stop that led to the shooting.  The traffic stop took place in a stretch of highway that is undergoing major construction.

ABC 33/40 is continuing to follow this story and will have updated developments on-air and online.

Name hasn't been released publicly, but he was a friend of a friend (who is also an officer.)  Left behind a wife and 3 month old from what I understand.

Not much info besides it was a routine stop late at night in that construction zone on I65.  I live in Pelham, and passed where it happened this morning on the way to work as there were still a few cars on the scene.  :(
Token... be careful buddy.  I have a lot of friends who are in law enforcement... it could have been any one of them, and honestly, I've had my max for funerals this year.

As my facebook status says.... there are not punishments in place today fitting for those that kill the ones who protect us.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Prayers go out regardless...

I used to work with a couple of Pelham PD guys at another dept.  I still have no word on who it is at this point, but chances are I don't know him if he worked midnights, and I hope it's not a friend.

The officer was Phillip Davis.
I cannot figure out though, why in the hell the brother of a Police Officer would be able to shoot another officer.

I won't speculate on what it is, but obvously something unknown about this "perfect family man" will fall out of the closet here real soon.

Thank God it wasn't someone I knew, but still very, very tragic!

OK... now this is just weird.

Now it really makes no sense.  I mean, I have a string of traffic violations, I've even been arrested for going 167 in a 55 on the inside shoulder, and I would never shoot a cop.  And I don't have a brother who is a police officer.

What the hell?  I think a whoooooole story on BOTH sides of this is about to come out over the next few days/weeks. :(

BOTH sides?  You think the Police Officer and this guy knew each other or something?  My bet is "perfect family man pharmacist dude" was about to be exposed in some way (drugs, affair, gay affair), and panicked in the worst possible way.

You know the media won't leave him and his family out of it, victim or not.

Why would they take his brother (cop) into custody as well?

It's Alabama...unless the cop was dirty for sure, they'll make him a hero.  I've heard others speculate about "personal shit"...I guess it's not out of the question, but my money is on "perfect family man" panicked at the thought of his fairy tale life coming crashing down if he got stopped.

Either way... it's sad, and it's just not right.

I guess I would just prefer an outright criminal, someone that I can mindlessly send to the chair in my imagination and not feel anything but grateful that the streets are one moron safer. Some white boy with tattoos on his neck in a stolen car with 20 kilo's of booger sugar in the back seat.... then I can feel SAFER knowing he's gone.

I don't know that I feel safer knowing a pharmacist gets the death chair.  It just makes me wonder which one of MY "normal" neighbors is a future cop killer. :(

Gray areas.... they're a bitch.

Maybe the brother tried to help him get away instead of turning him in?  Maybe he was with the bad guy when he was caught?

Sad situation. My niece was friends with Davis. This shook her up. I've always stated I would get nothing done as a cop. I would be too busy filling out reports that I pulled my weapon AGAIN to tap on the window while asking for ID. No one can be trusted.

Don't know how true it is, but this is what I'm hearing.  Brother is saying he was turning him in, but they were caught on a traffic stop.

That's what's being reported.  It's plausible since they were stopped in Hoover I guess.

I didn't know him personally (just a few friends that did) but I used to see him every month or so at the gas station around the corner.  The police station is a mile from where I live, so I use the same gas station the cops go to.  It's how I "know" any of the cops around here... and I'm fairly certain they all know which car is mine.

The only thing that upsets me more than an officer being killed in the line of duty is the children he/she leaves behind. I know I'm biased here, but those children should have a college fund granted to them right now. Those kids will live their entire life without knowing their father. Not having their father there to send them to school on their first day. Not having their father to watch them at their first sporting event. Not having their father to watch them walk across the stage of their high school graduation or having their father standing beside them on their wedding day.

The absolute very least this country owes this officer, who gave his life in the line of duty, is the very best opportunity for his children to have successful lives. The very least this country owes the children of this fallen officer is the same free college education awarded to any poverty stricken child who is fed and clothed by the state because their sorry ass parents don't want to work for a living.
