Quote
Nick Saban does revenge like The Godfather
By Kevin Scarbinsky -- The Birmingham News
December 02, 2009, 1:35PM

Fool Nick Saban once, shame on you.

Fool him twice ...

Fool.

Don't you know you can't fool him twice?

Not unless you're a legend, or a legend in the making.

Urban Meyer will try to become just the second coach to beat Saban in two straight meetings since Saban first came to the SEC.

The one and only so far: A former Bull Gator, Steve Spurrier.

Spurrier and Florida were superior to Saban and LSU in 2000 and 2001, Saban's first two years in the conference.

Otherwise, 13 different teams have beaten Saban one year and gotten the chance to do it again that year, like Tennessee in the 2001 SEC Championship, or the next.

Saban is 13-0 in those return matches, and so 13-1 overall since he came south.

The man does revenge like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II.

The 2009 SEC Championship is a revenge game, since Meyer and the Gators took down Saban and the Tide 31-20 in this same national semifinal in 2008.

Friends and former colleagues have no doubt that Saban has spent more than a few waking moments since Dec. 6, 2008, trying to figure out a better way to skin a Gator.

Listen to former Saban assistant Lance Thompson, who left after last year for Tennessee.

``If you could send somebody cloak-and-dagger to go to Nick's lake house up on (Lake) Burton, I assure you that you will find some DVD's or some computers with some Florida offensive video,'' Thompson said. ``That's the way the guy is. In everything we did, the next day, he would say, `OK, guys. What do we need to do to make it better?'

``I guarantee you he watched Florida tape last summer. I guarantee you.

``Losing eats at him. He's not gonna rest until he finds a way to win.''

Take that visit Saban got last July in Tuscaloosa from Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. They've known each other since Saban recruited in the 1970s at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio, where Stoops' father coached his sons.

Does anyone believe that, on their visit, Saban and Stoops didn't talk about ways to attack the Florida offense?

The Gators may have beaten the Sooners 24-14 in the BCS Championship Game, but Stoops' defense held the Florida offense to its lowest point total of the season.

``We just got together and talked a little bit of ball,'' Saban said Monday. ``Nothing specific. We are both defensive guys. We enjoy talking defensive football.

``Will Muschamp is my good friend, too, and we usually get together at the lake once a summer, but we don't just talk about golf and the weather.

``We sort of gravitate to talking about ball some of the time.''

Muschamp, of course, is the Texas defensive coordinator.

After Alabama and Texas win Saturday, it'll set up a reunion in the BCS Championship Game.

With ball off the table, what will they talk about until then?

I love numbers and stats, but I can't stand it when a number is thrown out there and no support is given with it.

So, 13-1 in games to someone he just lost to.  Let's see if it's just genius coaching or if there are some explanations there.

In his LSU days, he had 9 losses where he played the same team the next year.  Of those 9 times, he won the next meeting 8 times.  The one he loss was the one to Spurrier that Scarbinski mentions (lost in 2000 and 2001).

But, if you look at his 8 wins, 5 of them were home wins...meaning he lost on the road the year before, then beat that same team in Baton Rouge the next year.  Big deal.

Of the 3 wins that weren't home wins, two of them were against Ron Zook at Florida (the first against an 8-4 team, the second coming against a 7-5 team).  The other road victory was against Alabama in 2003 when LSU was 13-1 and Alabama was 4-9 (the year before it was a 10-3 Alabama that beat an 8-5 LSU).

At Alabama, it's pretty simple too.

First of all, he had a 6-6 team his first year and a 12-0 team his second year.  In the first year, he had losses to a 9-3 Auburn team, an 8-5 Mississippi State team, and a 12-2 LSU team.  Of those 6 losses in 2007, he played 4 of those teams the next season, beating them all, which would seem to prove Scarbinski's point.

However, in 2008, he beat a 5-7 Auburn team, a 7-5 LSU team, and a 4-8 MSU team...with a 12-0 Alabama team.  Only the win over Georgia was a true rebound win, beating a quality team.

So there you have the break down.  Of the 13 turn around games, 5 of them were road losses followed by home wins...no big deal.  Two of them were against significantly weaker Florida teams (standard Zook losses).  Four of them were to teams significantly worse than the team that had beaten him the year before (Alabama in 03, Auburn, LSU, and MSU in 07).  That leaves two games.  One he lost, in 2001 to Spurrier, and one was last years win over Georgia.

Beating teams at home the year after losing on the road is something most coaches manage.  Losing to teams with better records than you and beating teams with a worse record than you is pretty normal too.  So sure Skarbinski, he only lost one of those games....but of all the wins, only 1 meant a damn thing.

And seriously, I post some valid information about the numbers Scarbinsky is wacking off about and you come with "biggest pussy award" for a guy with a serious neck injury and a guy that ran for 1,250 yards in the SEC?  That's pretty sad.

As Harvey would say...."seriously?  Never?"

I would say try harder, but if you're at Your Mama jokes right out of the gate, then I would assume there isn't anything left in the tank after that. I will award points for the RWS Trophy, though.

The picture of Etheridge was in response to Chizad, not you. You didn't post the Prothro pic just out of the blue for no apparent reason as he did. But hey, I guess that is OK to do that, but I'm a horrible person for posting something right back.

As for Sarbinsky, meh, its Scarbinsky. Usually he's writing some hate piece about Alabama, so whatever. For me, he is almost on the same level as Finebaum. I really wouldn't take anything that either one of those fucktards wrote very seriously. I don't give a shit if he is 13-1 or 1-13 against return matches. Fuck, Alabama has never had a back-to-back 12 win season. Saban has never had back-to-back 10+ win seasons. No SEC quarterback in his first year as a starter of recent history, outside of some NFL superstars and Tebow and maybe Leak?, have had good seasons. Etc, etc, etc. There are all kinds of trends and patterns that get broken. Patterns can be a good indicator, sure. Depending on what you're talking about, anyway.

I don't think the statistics he wrote of really mean shit, one way or another. Judging the total body of work by both teams this season tells me both teams are beatable.

Your pic post was a fail.  Epic.

His had the "Oh snap" tag which added the humor factor.  Yours?  Negative on the humor.

It was very ham-fisted and poorly executed.  I give you a 1.9 out of 10.

Interesting you feel that way about Skarbinsky, I don't read him often, but what I see is that he typically plays it pretty even.  He says positive and negative things about both programs.  To compare him to Finebaum is pretty crazy though.  You can barely tell what Finebaum is saying with Saban's cock in his mouth.  Scarbinsky likes to play both sides, which I don't mind...there are always things a fan wants to hear about their program, and a truth a fan doesn't want to hear about their program...he seems to fit both in fairly well.
