8 U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan
October 27, 2009 10:54 a.m. EDT
U.S. troops in Afghanistan have taken heavy losses this week.

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- The U.S. military suffered another day of heavy losses in Afghanistan on Tuesday as roadside bombs killed eight U.S. service members, the U.S. military said.

An Afghan civilian working with NATO troops also was killed in the attacks in southern Afghanistan, the military said.

The military gave no further details about the bombings, which it said also wounded several other service members.

The attacks happened a day after 14 Americans were killed in a pair of helicopter crashes in Afghanistan. It was the largest number of Americans killed in Afghanistan in a single day in more than four years.

With the deaths of two troops on Sunday, a total of 24 Americans -- most of them military -- have been killed in a 48-hour period. That makes October 2009, with 58 fatalities, the deadliest month for the U.S. military since the Afghanistan war began in October 2001.

Enemy action was not thought to be the cause of either of Monday's helicopter crashes. Three Drug Enforcement Administration special agents and seven U.S. troops were killed in one crash in western Afghanistan as they returned from a raid on a compound believed to be harboring insurgents tied to drug trafficking.

The other crash, in which two helicopters collided over southern Afghanistan, killed four Marines.

Well, in fairness, that link was from CNN.com. MSNBC.com has a similar headline, and I got the news from my AP iPhone app that pushes updates of breaking headlines.

Will it wake people up a bit? Probably not.

Question for you politically inclined, militarily skilled peoples.  What is our overall objective in Afghanistan?  To smoke out Bin Laden and his followers?  To secure control of the country for a particular governmental regime? How will we know we've won and it's time to go home?

No slant here or alterior motive.  I'm asking because this war has really just come back to the forefront in recent months while it seemed to have taken a backseat to the Iraq situation for years.  I seriously just had the impression we had a nominal force over there all these years trying to root out terrorists and help the fight against the Taliban or some other obscure band of rocket carrying sheet-heads.

While I was in(101st), anytime we trained for middle east fun, was just what we did, (to start) kick the living the shit out of them. (Long term) build up the govt and the local's. IMO we got lazy, and focused on IRAQ. Iraq-surged worked and the little shit bags went back to Afghanistan. Now we need to do the same there. Every day he wait more U.S. Troops are being killed. And mark my word, watch him not approve any troops. I was in long enought to serve under dem leadership. ANd they gut the military. They always do.

This.

And don’t think that this upswing in American deaths is just coincidence.  You have a perceived weak American president who keeps apologizing to the world about America. The enemy knows this and is trying to show the cost of what will happen with more troops.

Watch how it works.

If CNN reports how bad the war and/or economy are going, then, well it's Bush's fault. He did it. And look what poor Barry has to clean up.

If CNN reports how good Iraq or anywhere is going, well, by golly, look at that damned Barack! That guy in one hell of a leader. We should make coins and plates with his image on it, and sell them on QVC to illustrate to the masses how we feel about the messiah.

The news networks know exactly what they are doing and who they really work for!

Im sure Dallas can vouch for this, but a lot of times it feels like we don't even know what we're doing over here.  It's different than other wars because you trained to kill and make people submit to you, but you train and train and train in one thing and when you get over here it's totally different set of rules.  The bad thing is we've come to accept it with our ever changing rules of engagement.

it's a lot like this... If you had a football team capable of hanging 70+ points against your arch rival and it demoralized the ever living shit out of their program for years and years, would you not do it?

Instead of being able to hang 70, we're kicking field goals to keep us in the game and not trying to hurt the other teams' fans feelings.  We want to be the nice guys who will help you up after we arm tackle you to the ground.

Fuck this, just uncuff our ass, let us fight... the way we've trained.  The way we want to, the way our fathers did, and their fathers, and their fathers.  Let us light up a cig, lay waste to whomever or WHATEVER looks at us in a harmful way until they understand that "hey, these mother fuckers aren't messing around".

Until we are able to do that, we are just out there... trying to do just that without being reprimanded or worrying about our careers.

Sorry.

It was all fun and games until my cutting score dropped b/c I no longer had a valid rifle range qual.

And then the best part, when I was complaining to the training officer and his gunny, the gunny told me I could practice snapping in with a broom stick.

While in Europe I had a 90 day wonder, we had just came back from the field (Friday) and we had 510's ( Pershing missle trucks)- We are going back that very monday. we clean the vehicles and are ready to go to the house, this crunchy FNG tells us to Armor all the tires so they look good over the weekend. As the plt Sgt I tell him that is not a good idea as we will be in mud on monday. Monday afternoon all four of the haulers get stuck, BN cmdr comes by and wants to know what how all four got stuck, I told him the LT had us put Armor All on the tires.
Last I saw of the LT was the BN cmdr stomping a mudhole in his ass and made the LT work with the wrecker crew to get them all un-stuck.

Dumbest one I was ever around was out of the academy.  We were training on night navigation and had to get about 10 clicks in a certain amount of time after being dropped off with no knowledge of exactly where we were.  After spending about 30 minutes orientating my team and figuring out where we were we set off on course.  About a click in this jackass decides that he should run the compass for our azimuth.  After a mild debate I decided "how bad could he fuck it up"? (I actually thought this)
Gave this fucktard the compass.  For the next couple of clicks I am asking him if we are good?  He keeps telling me we are.  After about the third click I realize that I am not seeing any terrain features that I was expecting to and begin becoming skeptical about us being on course.
Make it up to this butter bar and realize he has set the compass on the front site and compensator of his rifle which has thrown his azimuth off about 5 degrees.  We are way off course and way behind schedule.  We adjust our route and begin the fastest double time I had ever done.  The butter bar dropped out and we left him.  Made our checkpoint in time by the hair of our teeth.  When the CO asked why we were so late I told him and told him he had a platoon commander still out in the woods somewhere.  I never saw that fucker again.  I guess the CO transfered him out.
