Auburn in BCS standings and computer polls...
« on: October 08, 2009, 12:16:07 PM »
With five of the six BCS computer polls now out, we can get a pretty good idea of what the standings would look like if they were released right now.

Looks like Auburn would roughly about #16.

We're #19 in both polls, but the computers like us so far at an average of #10.

SEC in the computer rankings:

Anderson & Hester -
1. LSU
2. Alabama
4. Auburn
7. Florida
23. Georgia

Billingsly -
1. LSU
2. Alabama
4. Florida
15. Georgia
25. Auburn

Colley Matrix -
1. LSU
4. Alabama
5. Auburn
8. Florida

Massey -
1. LSU
4. Alabama
9. Auburn
16. Florida

Sagarin ELO-Chess -
1. LSU
2. Alabama
7. Auburn
10. Florida
17. Georgia
22. S Carolina

Here are other programs that are either in the top 10 of the human polls or top 10 of the computer rankings.

1. Alabama - 2.93
2. LSU - 3.00
3. Florida - 3.60
4. Texas - 4.87
5. Boise St - 6.07
6. Va Tech - 6.40
7. USC - 8.13
8. Iowa - 9.53
9. Cincy - 9.8
10. TCU - 10.53
11. Ohio St - 10.6
12. Miami - 11.00

Auburn - 16

Notes:
The computers do not like Ohio State so much, with an average 15.8 computer rating vs #8 in both human polls.

The computers love Iowa with an average computer ranking of 3.6 (four of the five have them at #2 or #3).  Iowa has a human poll average of 12.5.

The computers also love Wisconsin with an average of 10.8. They have a human poll average of #25.

The computers really like Auburn as well, with an average of 10 in the computers compared to #19 in the human polls.

The computers are not too impressed with the human poll leaders #1 Florida and #2 Texas.  Florida has an average computer ranking of #9, coming in as low as #16 in the Massey rankings.  Texas has an average computer ranking of 10.6, coming in as low as #21, also in the Massey rankings.

Boise State is one of the more consistent in the computer polls, being as high as #5, but only as low as #10.

Not saying it will happen, but we are in fine shape as far as the polls are concerned.  If we were to win out, we knock out LSU, Alabama, and Florida in SECC.  By doing all of that we would be a shoe in for the MNC game.  Again, not saying it will happen, but the road is there.

LSU is a unanimous #1?

And phuk Billingsly.

The computers take a strange rout, but they usually end up pretty close to right on.  Take LSU at #1 and Florida #9.  After this weekend, if Florida wins, they will likely be #1 or #2.  If LSU wins, they will stay #1 in the computers and become #1 in the human polls.  It's not as crazy as it seems.

Also, I can never disagree with Richard Billingsly...his method awards Auburn the 1983 national title...so I never argue with his results.   His is one that starts with teams relative to where they ended last year...so his takes a little time (as do all of them) to have teams move up and move down as the year goes on.  We started #55 on his rankings (based on 5-7 ending of last year) and have moved up 30 spots to #25 (and that's without playing anyone in his top 25).

We still have to face his #1, #2, #15, and #27 teams.  If we win 3 of those games, we'll shoot up the list.
