Thoughts - Week 4

Thoughts - Week 4
« on: September 27, 2009, 05:07:03 PM »
1/3 of the season finished.  It's going by way too fast.  I don't want to endure another offseason.

Auburn...

- No special teams.  Defense?  We'll get to that later.  Special teams?  Might as well have been a middle school team covering kickoffs.  Might as well have been a cheerleader returning punts.  Our best moment on special teams was when they threw Ben Tate into kickoff return.  Boulware needs some heat.

- Defense gave up.  I don't think the defense felt like they had to play the whole game.  It looked to me, especially at the beginning of the 3rd quarter, that the defense thought they just needed to get through one more stop and they would get to rest.  When Noel Devine gashed us for 70 yards, I saw defensive tackles sprinting along with defensive backs trying to catch up to him.  When Page gashed us for 30 yards (which was timed the same as Devine's 70 yard run), I saw a few guys standing around.

- Ball State gained 260 yards total on 74 plays.  That equals 3.5 yards a play.  After their first 22 plays, they had gained 24 yards.  We didn't so much as play bad defense as we played bad special teams.  It looked like we played it safe on D by giving them a few yards before we gave them a big hit.

Alabama...

- We look great, but do you want to play them right now?  Their defense is always in position.  They always seem to be there right at the right moment.  They have a tremendous amount of talent and are well coached.

- But lookout, Bama fans.  Losing Hightower for the year isn't good.  Rolando might be the captain of the defense, but I always thought Hightower was the most talented and he plays Saban's most important position - Jack Linebacker.  His loss will be tough to overcome.  Luckily, there are plenty of other players that can pick up the slack, but I wouldn't expect total domination on defense like there would be if he were out there.

- McElroy looked horrible in the 1st half.  The running game looked mediocre except for a big run by Richardson.  The trick play was awesome, but that's just what it was - a trick play.  I'm not sold on the offense.  It's rusty and needs some work.  Maze's touchdown could have very well have been an INT if the defender knew what in the world he was doing.  Richardson was actually hit twice in the backfield but Arkansas doesn't seem to know how to tackle.  Ingram was held in check.  The receivers had a few drops.  I'm telling you...if a loss is coming, it's coming on offense.

Arkansas...

- Petrino will be gone after next year.  The defense hasn't improved at all.  This is the SEC.  Flinging the ball around won't win games unless you have a defense that can make plays as well.  The tackling was more embarassing than Auburn's, which is saying a lot.

- Mallett choked.  I get it.  He's a freakish talent, but he obviously isn't much when it comes to nerves.  He sucked under pressure.  He couldn't handle the big stage.  He was obviously over his head.  The lack of run game didn't help him out either.

Georgia...

- I can't wait to see LSU, Florida, Auburn, and Georgia Tech stomp mudholes in Georgia's ass.  Arizona St's offense was horrible except for that Niles kid.  I saw AJ Greene make a few big plays to keep the game alive, and Georgia lucked out - Arizona St was worse than they were.  They get LSU at home, but LSU's offense will roll this week.  It doesn't having three straight road games afterwards.  Good luck, UGA.  It's about all you've got to keep your season alive despite your admirable record right now.

Florida...

- I wasn't even watching the game and I felt a gasp hit my chest.  Tebow hurt?  Left for the hospital?

- Brantley's good enough to win without him...not.  Tebow has been the soul of the offense this year.  The receivers haven't stepped up to a NC level.  The running game is decent, but needs that "wildcat" threat in Tebow.

- It'll be interesting to see Florida go to Baton Rouge.  If Tebow isn't 100%, it might be the upset of the year.

LSU...

- You need a new coach.  I don't get it.  It's obvious you have talent all over the field, but you let Miss St almost beat you?  And they should have beat you.  Mullen got cute.  Chad Jones was handed the spotlight.

Miss St...

- Just wear bags on your head.

Ole Miss...

- I said at the end of last year when Ole Miss started getting hyped.  You can't replace a left tackle like Oher without going through some growing pains.  Snead has looked mediocre all year.  He's been rushed.  He's doesn't have a running game to complement him.  His only thread at receiver is McCluster.  And if it weren't for McCluster, Ole Miss would have finished with 3 points against South Carolina.

- I said this after week 1 - Ole Miss is an injured-McCluster away from being very average.  And by average, I mean maybe, hopefully, optimistically 7 wins.

Miami...

- You were back.  You still are.  Don't give up.  Jacory Harris needs to keep doing his thing.  I think it was a perfect storm for Va Tech.  Consistent rainfall and home field advantage.  It's hard to overcome that.

- Beat Oklahoma.  Do that and you'll be kings again.

- So what that Bradford's back?  Who cares?  Oh...wait...yeah you might care.  He's probably going to be determined to get his team back in the NC race now that top ten teams like yourself are paving the way by losing.  He's also going to be determined to keep his draft stock up.  And his teammates are probably going to be jacked up as well.

Final thought...

- It's going by too fast, but this has been fun.  Thanks, Chizik.

Good read Townhall... The only part I disagree on is the defense giving up statement.  Actually if you watch what happened, it was a combination of playing second and third strings most of the second half, and just not doing a lot of aggressive blitzing.   We played very soft (which I fucking HATE) but I believe they wanted to get inexperienced players playing time and play a bend, not break defense.  We did that.  It didn't make for a good time watching Ball State score as much as they did.  In fact, the ONE drive we stopped Ball State in the fourth quarter, our starters on D came in for one drive and stopped them rather easily...next offensive possession? Ball State went right down the field on walk ons and first time players.

Like I said in a post elsewhere... I don't think I'd read too much into our defense in this game.  I see Roof getting a lot of heat in different forums and frankly it comes from not paying attention in most cases.

That's my thoughts anyway...
