Okay, Who's Watching Shark Week?
« on: August 04, 2009, 02:36:36 PM »
I'm addicted to Shark Week on Discovery Channel.  I was out sick yesterday with nothing to do but lay up and watch TV.  Sharks all day long.  They replayed the episode about the 2 attacks in Wes' territory a couple of years ago that killed a girl at Miramar Beach and took a guys leg off in Cape San Blas a few miles down the beach.  We were down there for a week at that time and the day before the girl was killed, a big Bull Shark was cruising the beach.  The water was crystal clear that day and you could walk along beside it down the beach and watch him swim.  He was maybe 25-30 yards off shore, if that.

Not saying it was the same one by any means.  Sharks are everywhere..ALL the time.  But, it was just eerie to see one so close up and then have people attacked soon afterwards.

People who get bitten by sharks are generally doing stupid things.

Here are things to avoid:

1) Don't swim at dusk or dawn.
2) Don't get past your waist if the water is murky/sandy/cloudy.
3) Don't wear shiny jewelry/watches in the water.

and...this should be the no brainer, but some people still get bitten doing it:
4) DO NOT swim around a guy who is shark fishing from the beach.  This is what happened to a kid in P'cola.  There was a feel good rescue story about the man who went out and dragged the shark to shore.  Well, that guy was the dumbass chumming on the beach for sharks.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

I would think that fucking a shark wouldn't be nearly as pleasurable as fucking a goat.  Sharks are scaly and sharp and slimy.  Goats are warm and furry.

A shark blow job has got to be a one-time experience, I would think.

A great reason to have Tivo or a DVR.  Shark Week is the best thing on The Discovery Channel.....except for The Deadliest Catch.

The Deadliest Catch is easily one of the best shows on TV.  I haven't been able to figure one thing out, though.  A few years ago, the first couple seasons of the show, it was a free for all, whoever caught the most the fastest could sell them for the best price.  But in an effort to improve safety, they changed the rules a couple years ago and now each ship has a quota.  What I can't figure out and I've never seen them explain is how they set the quota, and how some have higher quotas than others.  It also seems like you can sell part or all of your quota to other ships.  Has anyone seen an explanation of how this works?

I also like Dirty Jobs.  Usually pretty funny.

I remember my one experience with parasailing years ago from the beach at Spinnacker's in P.C.  Being that high up over the water, you could look down and see what's really going on around everyone swimming.  It will make you type out Wes' instructions and warnings on a 3X5 index card, have it laminated and carry it in your swim suit as a reminder.  There's some highly dangerous shit swimming reeeeal close by.

I would have figured that you didn't need the laminated card to know that you don't want a blowjob from a shark?

Quote
Rationalization: derby vs. quota
After the 2005 season, the Alaskan crab industry transitioned from a derby style season to a quota system. This transition is known as rationalization. Under the old derby style, a large number of crews competed with each other to catch crab during a restrictive time window. Under the new Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) system, established owners have been given quotas which they can fill at a more relaxed pace. In theory, it is intended to be safer, which was the main rationale for the change in the fishing rules. The transition to the quota system was also expected to increase the value of crab, by limiting the market of available crab. An influx of foreign crab negated some of these gains during the 2006 season.[6] The rationalization process put many crews out of work as the owners of many small boats found their assigned quotas too small to meet operating expenses; during the first season run under the IFQ system, the fleet shrank from over 250 boats to around 89 mostly larger boats with high quotas.

Quote
Congress approved the harvest changes in 2003. Under the new system, vessel owners are free to claim their annual harvest quota each year, or sell the harvest rights to the highest bidder  The law also divided up purchase rights for crab among processors.

I have my DVR setup to record all the new shows for this year. I have only had to chance to watch the one about the 1916 NJ attacks and the one that Les Stroud hosted. I love how Les jumped from a helicopter into a bunch of Reef sharks, landing on one and another one took a swipe at him.

I just saw one of the coolest Shark Week Moments ever.

I am sitting here watching all the episodes I have recorded from this past week and was starting to watch "Great White Appetite" being hosted by a some former Marine force recon guy. The show is just starting and he is sitting in a zodiac boat near Guadalupe Island, doing the opening introduction, when all of a sudden a 14 foot Great White attacks the freakin' zodiac and just starts chewing the hell out of it. Luckily for the jarhead, the bigger boat that was filming him was close enough by for him to jump onto before the shark totally destroyed the boat. Even after the dude left the zodiac, the shark came back for one more quick hit before swimming off.

Saw that.  Incredible.  The slow motion footage of a 17' Great White coming out of the water about 12' is just nutz.

Yeah, when they show the slow motion replay of those sharks flying out of the water, that does not look right at all. That shark attacking that boat unprovoked me made me think about the Jaws movies.
