Sotomayor...how will Lindsay Graham vote?
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:02:09 PM »
What a surprise.  Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) decides to vote in favor of Sotomayor.  At least Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ) is voting against her (not that it means anything; she'll be confirmed by the Socialists and the spineless Republicans anyway):

Quote
July 22, 2009, 1:21 pm
More Senators on Sotomayor: Kyl, No. Graham, Yes
By Kate Phillips

More senators are weighing in this afternoon on where they stand on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

Citing what he viewed as a lack of straightforward answers, speeches and controversial decisions by the judge, Senator Jon Kyl, an Arizona Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, just announced on the Senate floor that he would oppose her confirmation. Senator Thad Cochran, Republican of Mississippi, quickly followed him and announced his opposition.

But Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina and a member of the judiciary panel, said the path of “least political resistance” would be for him to vote against her. But he cited her qualifications, and said that “elections matter.”

I don't understand why Republicans have focused on ruthlessly going after Sotomayor.

She's pretty moderate. Choose your battles.

All this is doing is alienating the hispanic voters even more than the Republicans already have.

Remember, a large majority of hispanics voted for Bush in 2000. They pretty much leveled out in 04, and by 08, most hispanics identify themselves as Democrats.

This is another example of Republicans shooting themselves in the foot.

Why should people make decisions based on getting future votes?

Fuckin' up our country.  America/our government/democracy isn't and shouldn't be a sporting event.  If you believe something, voice your belief.  If enough people agree with you, then you get to enact the policies.  You represent what the majority of the people want.

There's too many politicians pandering to people for their votes.

"Well, I'll get the Christians by doing this, but then I'll get the Hispanics by doing that.  Yes, yes.  Soon I'll have their votes and THEN I can do whatever the fuck I want to! HAHAHAHAHA.  America.  Fuck yeah."

I don't think that the Republicans have ruthlessly gone after Sotomayor.  Quite frankly the Miss America candidates were asked more difficult questions than Sotomayor was asked (in her hearings) with the possible exception of the gun control questions which she refused to answer.

She is not moderate.  She did a nice job sounding moderate which is what every Supreme Court candidate does regardless of their constitutional philosophy...no one wants to be Borked for answering questions honestly...so they all do a strange Kabuki dance of legalese.  The ONE has probably vetted her thoroughly enough to know that she is as activist as he is otherwise he'd would not have picked her.

One reason I have not been ruthless against her is because she is going to be confirmed; I think every Republican realizes that fact even if they all vote against her (which won't happen thanks to Sen. Lindsay Grahamnesty (who probably IS pandering to the Hispanics by supporting her, don't you think?).

And I think they are choosing their battles...when/if Justice Anthony Kennedy retires (or dies) there will be a battle like you have not seen to replace him if The ONE is still in office.  (Kennedy is an ideological swing voter on the court; Souter was a leftist and he's being replaced by a leftist.)

I'm just as interested in how Lindsay Lohan will vote on this as I am the rest.

We, the people, have lost control of the clown car.  It will have to crash and be rebuilt before things get better.

We are no longer in need of reformation, we are in need of revolution. That's the path this assclown of a president will lead us.  Eventually enough will be enough and there will be revolution.

I'm tired of the needs of the minority outweighing the needs of the majority. I'm sick of pandering to the lowest common denominator.  I'm tired of shirking the pursuit of excellence in order to avoid hurting the feelings of the mediocre.

This country was founded on the principles of opportunity. We claim to cherish the concept of equal opportunity.  But the actions of the fuckwads in office are geared to a different result.  They want to force equal outcome.  That's simply not possible, nor is it practical. It's a great exercise in your idealogical collegiate days, but in practice it is an epic fail. Epic.

Revolution is coming.

So what you're saying is, Hispanics such as Sotomayor are the "lowest common denominator"?

No what he is saying is that this system of government cannot work based on whom ever is able to scream the loudest in lieu of policy being made for the majority.

How does this relate to the topic of this thread?

You asked the question, "So what you're saying is, Hispanics such as Sotomayor are the "lowest common denominator"?

I answered that it has dick to do with Hispanics specifically but with a minority in general when it come to policy decisions.

It relates to your statement to Kaos.  Nothing else.

What policy decision is everyone so opposed to?

We were simply talking about Republicans being "spineless" for voting in favor of Sotomayor.

Then Kaos goes on this rant about Minorities takin' over. We're catering to the lowest common denomonator, etc.

Seems like either a completely out of left field comment, or he's emphatically upset that someone not of the master race dares to join the supreme court...

You're the only fuck who sees anything about race in my commentary.  I think that makes you a fucking RACIST.

You're reading waaaaay too much into it.

My position is simply this:  I don't really give a fiddly fuck how anybody votes on Sotamayer because it really doesn't matter.  "By the people and for the people" has been overridden.  Our government's concern is now primarily "by the special interest group and for my re-election campaign."  Fuck them all.

Republicans ARE spineless.  Democrats ARE spineless. They no longer represent the people they claim to represent and are interested only in party maneuverings and power grabs.  Richard Shelby's JOB should be to reflect the will of the people he represents.  Do you think he does that?

So what fucking difference does it make?

And fuck you for injecting race into everything, you fucking racist.  My "rant" had NOTHING to do with "minorities taking over."  The "lowest common denominator" comes from education where teachers are forced to tailor their teaching to the lowest level, often leaving the more intelligent kids in a state of boredom because we're afraid to admit that ALL kids just aren't bright.  Some need extra help.  Others need to be on advanced tracks to make maximum use of their skills.  But we can't do that, it isn't "fair."   Has nothing to do with black, white or asian -- although the asian kids are pretty smart!

We've reached a point to where our government thinks it can legislate equality of outcome as opposed to equality of opportunity.  And that's ridiculous.

It's people with their heads (and dicks) in the sand like this who fuck up every legitimate opportunity for discussion.  Scream racism and watch folks run for cover.
