SEC Media Days
« on: July 22, 2009, 12:56:05 PM »
Starts today, around 12:30.  Lasts from today through Friday.  Think anything interesting will come out of it?  Want to hear what the new coaches have to say?  Or watch Houston Nutt squirm?  I always like this three day period because it means the start of football season.

Here is a live blog updated every few minutes or so:

I've never really understood the hoopla over SEC media days.  So coaches get together for a few days and give as much coachspeak as possible.  Whoo.

BUT.

It does mean football season is warming up.  WAR DAMN FOOTBALL!

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

YE OLDE COMMISSIONER MIKE SLIVE

    * He says: "We could be in a time that will be considered The Golden Age of the SEC."

    * He's noting the league's five national championships. That's Auburn swimming and diving, Florida football, LSU baseball, Georgia gymnastics and ... another one. Can't remember now.

    * One hundred fifty-nine SEC athletes won 51 medals in the Olympics. "If the SEC was a nation, we would have finished fourth in the medal count."

    * Fall games brought in 6.7 million fans last season. Led the nation again.

    * Spring games brought in 450,000 total.

    * League had 37 players drafted in April.

    * "That's the end of the brag pack for the moment."

    * "There is no safe harbor from the economic recession. We're fortunate that the league entered into its new television package when it did."

    * "There is no safe harbor from the technological revolution. We worked hard to retain the conference's digital rights. We are about to launch the SEC Digital Network."

    * He said they're upgrading the SEC's website and lots of that stuff.

    * "Secondary fractions ... are not new to the conference or the NCAA. In the SEC, secondary violations are reported to the conference office. We then review them. Every report is sent to the NCAA for a final review."

    * He acknowledged that some coaches assess situations with a risk-reward approach.

    * "Anytime they commit a secondary violation, they put themselves, the program, the conference and the prospect at risk."

    * "The SEC will be the most widely distributed conference in the nation this year."

    * He's rambling about the television deals.

ESPN REPRESENTATIVE WHOSE IDENTITY IS A MYSTERY

    * He's reviewing all the stuff I posted yesterday ... ESPN's regional distribution plans for the Saturday morning games.

    * The ESPNU games will be televised in HD, though you may not see them in HD because of your provider's limitations. (I know ESPNU is not in HD on Dish Network.)

    * "No games will go untelevised."

    * They're going to create the "SEC Academic Network" ... using ESPN360 technology, they'll launch a site that promotes academic endeavors. (Seriously?)

    * They're showing a video promoting the ESPN/SEC partnership. The montage included a shot of Tommy Tuberville's mug. How long ago this video was produced?

THAT'S A WRAP. Next up: Robert "Bob" Petrino

Auburn's Gene Chizik: Of quarterbacks, pressure at SEC Media Days
Posted by Charles Goldberg -- Birmingham News July 24, 2009 9:26 AM

Auburn coach Gene Chizik met the press at SEC Media Days on Friday and delivered a straight-forward preview/review of the Tigers, though had an interesting answer on the quarterback race.

Here are a few quick hits:

On the quarterback race:
(Auburn will have seven on campus when fall practice begins...)
``All of the sudden you have some young guys on campus. When you haven't locked it down, it means everybody'' has a chance. ``Obviously, people with experience have a little bit of a leg up.''

(Gold Mine advice: Don't make too much of that answer.)

On pressure of coaching:
``When you get into this profession, there's pressure everywhere. There's no more pressure put on Auburn football than what I put on our kids and myself. We put enough pressure on ourselves to be great.''

``We've set the foundation on what we want to do. The pressure is going to be there no matter what school you are at.

On his low-key approach:
``What gets you attention is when you win. This isn't about me. It's about Auburn.
Overall the years, when Auburn has gotten attention, it's because they've done something positive. That's what we want to do.''

On the reluctance to project how freshmen will do.
``I'm reluctant to talk about young players. I can't comment on it this early. We haven't even had a practice yet.

On the SEC West:
``It's not like SEC West championships are strangers to Auburn.''

On whether he voted Tim Tebow the All-SEC quarterback.
Yes, he did.

Am I reading too much into his comment of "it's not about me. It's about Auburn." that makes me think he is taking a dig at Saban?

I took it as diverting attention from 5-19.

5-19 coaches don't come in talking shit.  You'd better win first.

Kiffin had to be the douche bag that didn't vote for tebow. With all the hoopla about it I'll bet it gets his pulse up and , yet again, he says something really fucking stupid.

You didn't get the memo?

It was Spurrier. And then he rescinded his vote to make it unanimous and apologized.

He threw his assistant under the bus, basically saying he fucked it up.

Yeah, right.

But yeah, I can't for the life of me figure out what Kaos is talking about that Chizik makes him sick when he hears him speak.

He says all the right things. Yeah, I know, we'll see about the cattle, but the hat is A+ material.

I figured this out long ago. The reason?  It wasn't Kaos's idea.  .....and that's about the long and short of it.

You may now move forward with your Friday!  Is 11am a little too early for beer?
