Trial of John Katopodis: Records show computer charity funds transferred to cover car cost
Posted by Robert Gordon -- Birmingham News June 25, 2009 3:40 PM

Navy Lt. John Pohnel gave testimony this afternoon involving Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford and payment for a car through Computer Help for Kids.

Pohnel said he was about to enter flight school and needed to sell his 1965 Corvair in the summer of 2003. He said he told Katopodis of his intent to sell the car.
"In typical fashion, John wanted to help and he said he would find a buyer for the car," Pohnel said. Katopodis told him that Langford would buy the car for $4,000.

Katopodis is on trial in Birmingham federal court on mail and wire fraud charges. He is accused of using the charity's money to take exotic trips and buy gifts for friends.

The plan, Pohnel said, was for him to drive the car from Pensacola, Fla., to Birmingham, turn the car over to Katopodis and Katopodis would sell the car to Langford. Pohnel said he got a guitar from Langford instead. He said he had the guitar appraised and found that it was worth $350.

"I called John and told him I wanted my money," he said.

Pohnel said he did later receive the $4,000.

Bank records show that $4,000 was transferred into Pohnel's account from the Computer Help for Kids.

Especially here in Birmingham.

Even the sweet lil' old gramma...Bettye Fine Collins has been mixed up in the back room dealings with Langford and Katapodis.  When all this is over, we will make the DC local gubmint look like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Yeah, but it will have to pay an occupational tax.

Damn, this place is hilarious. New Orleans can't hold a candle to Birminghamistan. They pay the owner of City Stages $250,000 one week to keep it going & what happens? The owner announces it the next week it is closing. A quarter of a million right down the shitter.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see everyone holding an elected position here indicted on a federal racketeering charge.

He might be a crook, but atleast Langford has is trying to make Birmingham a better place to live, instead of watching it die like previous mayors have.  Thats the reason Montgomery sucks so bad because Emory Folmar never did anything he just let the city die and didn't try to bring any entertainment or anything of cultural value to the city.  Now its starting to turn around in Montgomery a small bit thanks to what Bright did.  Pesonally in Birmingham I would love to see a Dome, an Aquarium, and anything else that would make this place better

Wow. Just wow.  Montgomery was a pretty nice place to live when Emory had the reigns. Balanced budget, low crime rate, public works on solid footing.   Now?  Not so much.  Bobby Bright is a tool of the first order who is going right down the road Arrington started in Birmingham and Maynard Jackson did here in Atlanta. Backroom under the table dealings are the order of the day and the day is long.

Somewhere along the lines everyone got convinced that unless they had a dome and an aquarium they were a nothing city.  A city has to have not only the interest but also the population/tax base to support those EXTRA items.  I would dare say that Atlanta has a better chance of making a dome or aquarium work and the aquarium here is almost bankrupt now.  You think it will work better in Montgomery or the Magic city?  The only thing magic left about Birmingham is how quickly they can pull the David Copperfield on a stack of hundreds.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

You do realize those things have to be paid for right?

Sure living in an 8 bedroom house with 70'' plasma's in every room would make my house a nicer place to live but guess what? I don't have the money for that. Neither does Birmingham.

Birmingham's gonna have it, because they are taxing the shit out of anyone working in their fair city.  If that doesn't work, Langford can just give Blount, Katapodis or Scruschy some big fat contract so he can make some money on the side and let them get the domr in place.

Don't forget about "May-nard's" successor, Bill Campbell, convicted on Tax Evasion charges; charged, but eventually acquitted on racketeering, bribery, and wire fraud.  Sleazy doesn't begin to describe him.

So what you're asking is "Are Politicians Born as Crooks, Liars, Thieves, and Cheats; OR Do They Choose To Be That Way?"

Sounds like the start of a good topic to me.

DO THE DOME NOW

LET'S DO SOMETHING

BRINGIN THE MAGIC BACK one backdoor deal at a time

I like one of the comments made on AL.com:

"Start the Trial NOW!"

*Edit*

I also liked:

"Kill it...Kill it with Fire"

*Edit 2*

I laughed at these also:

"A dome in Birmingham is like a 1992 Chevrolet Impala with 40,000 dollar
rims! Typical."

and

"Do me Now"? Oh, "Dome Now"!

*Edit 3*
This one made me laugh too...AND works for Atlanta too:

"Does this mean the Interstate lights might get turned on to help people find the Dome?"
