Race for 2012
« on: May 18, 2009, 12:39:59 PM »
I realize that it's certainly well ahead of time but I was very surprised (not pleasantly so) to read that the Club for Growth and Public Policy Polling has Huckabee listed as the current strongest GOP candidate for the 2012 primary.  It's just my opinion of course and I don't mean to offend any of the X's Arkansas friends but this guy is a bigoted, provincial bumpkin.  And he is the strongest GOP candidate.  Pardon my rhetorical vulgarity but you've got to be fucking kidding me.  If the GOP runs this guy against The ONE I'm not even going to vote...why waste my time?

This is an excerpt from Race 4 2012, all emphasis is my own:

Quote
Is Huckabee Our Strongest Candidate for 2012?

[18 May 2009]
Many conservatives, notably the Club for Growth, are not fond of Mike Huckabee because they see him as too liberal on economic issues.  He did raise taxes and increase spending as Governor.  However, a new poll by Public Policy Polling indicates that he, along with Mitt Romney, are more popular with the public than Sarah Palin or Newt Gingrich.  Gingrich is no surprise.  He was never popular with the general public when he was Speaker except at the very beginning, but he was always popular with the base.  Palin seems to have blown her opportunity to develop a good reputation with the public.

Huckabee has a net favorability rating of +8.  Romney is not far behind at +5.  Palin has a -7, and Gingrich has a -8.  Palin only a -10 with women, but she is still in negative territory at a -3 with men.  Huckabee also does the best against Obama though all four candidates trail.  Obama is more popular than any GOP contender with a +12 favorability.  It should be noted that Obama is still in his first year which is typically a honeymoon phase.  However, Huckabee manages to keep Obama under the magic 50% mark, trailing him 49-42.  Romney trails 50-39.  Palin trails 53-41, and Gingrich is behind 52-39.  Is a ticket led by Mike Huckabee the key to victory in 2012?

The first one that comes out and says "I ain't doing nothing in my first four years except cut the hell out of spending" will get my vote.

We are in such a shitty place that we cannot afford to do anything but that for four years.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I agree with you there.  Who would have thought that the Fed-Gov budget would be spoken of in terms of 'Trillions'?  Unbelievable.  I recall the Bush Administration folk talking about how huge the 700 Billion dollar TARP Bailout was going to be...that was nothing.  This current group is doped on hyper-spending...it would make their economic hero John Keynes swell with pride.  (Yes, the GOP was spending like crazy too so don't think I'm just calling the kettle black; I didn't like that spending either.)

The GOP really needs to rally behind a fresh, solidly-conservative candidate; not sure who that will be but I certainly hope it isn't Huckabee.

I still like Romney. I hope he wins the nomination.

There is also a guy from S. Carolina by the name of Jim Dement. That guy is pretty damn good too. He would be my first choice but I think he is way too down to earth to be taken seriously.

I'm unapologetic about my support of Mitt Romney.  His only problem will be the anti-Mormon bigots in the Republican Party (and they are there...I know a few of them personally...used to be one myself until I left the Baptist Church in part because of the bigotry and ignorance but I digress).

Anyway, Jim DeMint (R-SC) is a fairly solid conservative.  I like him as well and he could be a contender.

I liked Romney pretty good.  Once Fred dropped out Romney was the man I was behind.  I like DeMint and I agree could be a solid candidate.  One that I truly like but he will never get the support, nor probably run again is Duncan Hunter (R-Ca)

Yeah, I like Fred and Duncan.  It's still early yet and I have not given up on a new, younger which is probably what the GOP will need against The ONE.

Same here, I still like Bobby Jindal, even thought the MSM is trying it's hardest to discredit him everytime he turns around.

One I am interested to see is Duncan D Hunter.  He is Duncan Hunters son.  Good story on the kid, he goes to college, gets a job and when the 9/11 attacks took place he quit and joined the USMC.  Gets elected to his "pops" seat in Congress and has a pretty good conservative voting record so far.  32 years old, I would like to see him make a name for himself.  Who knows, if we can get a good conservative in 2012 and turn this thing around he might be ready to go in 2020.  Just a thought and good one at that, if I must say so myself.
