Beer, not recession-proof!?
« on: January 16, 2009, 03:24:11 PM »
I was really surprised to read this story this afternoon; but, then again, I wonder how sales of hard-liquor is doing?

At any rate, I guess with beer sales down the economy must really be bad.  Maybe the adult beverage industry needs to go ask Congress for a bailout...The ONE might be able to save them too after his "Immaculate Inauguration" next Tuesday.

This is an exerpt from an al-AP article, as usual all emphasis is my own:

Quote
Beer sales falling with economy
January 15, 2009 4:06 PM EST

MILWAUKEE - Even the brewing industry is starting to go flat in the worldwide economic slump.

SABMiller PLC, the London-based brewer of Grolsch, Miller Genuine Draft and Peroni Nastro Azzurro lagers, said on Thursday its beer shipments fell unexpectedly in the third quarter as consumers pulled back on their demand.

Carlsberg A/S, the Copenhagen-based maker of Carslberg beer, said it was cutting 274 jobs to save on costs due to a future "where we face more uncertainties and risks," the company said in a statement.

Beer usually holds up better than other categories during tough economic times, said Benj Steinman, editor of trade publication Beer Marketer's Insights, and that trend had been holding true during this recession for some segments of the industry. But the latest figures show the market is trending downward, perhaps accelerating as global economies continue to sputter, and relief seems uncertain.

Beer is "recession-resistant, not recession-proof," Steinman said.

SABMiller said lager volumes fell 1 percent in the three-month period that ended Dec. 31, compared with the same period a year earlier, because of the economy.

I thought that i have been single handedly keeping the beer industry strong.  I guess I'll have to drink even more for a while.

As a matter of fact, I think I will go crack my first one and officially enter the weekend

Have one for me too while you're at it.  I think I'm going to stick with the usual Jack and Coke tonight; I gotto do my part to help the liquor industry.

Will do, I'm all for propping up the economy

BTW have you tried Gentleman Jack?  I just switched from regular Jack a few weeks ago and I like it a little better.  I have been known to mix 6oz of Jack with a diet sprite into one of my large stadium cups and mellow out for the night.  Good times

Yes, I have.  I like to drink it on the rocks.

Never mixed Jack with Sprite though; I'll have to give it a try.

Jack and diet sprite doesn't tase as flat as Jack and coke to me.  Good stuff, it is what I drank/drink at every football game.

Well...if we're talking about something to drink at the football game that's usually bourbon on the rocks...maybe with a little water to dilute it just a bit.

Yeah, Jack and Coke does get a little flat...maybe I will try it mixed with Sprite for a change.

When drinking Gentlemen Jack, ice or mixed with ice water is the only way to go.  I have officially started the weekend myself.  My Ceegars came in today (I had dem bitches shipped over night), but it's too damn cold to go out and have a sip and a smoke.

Yeah, I got a shipment of seegars on the way.  I'm going to have a hard time finding room for them in my humidors...they're fairly full now.

It certainly is too cold to smoke outside!  I had a cigar going last night and made the mistake of stepping outside for a minute...I stepped back in and the damn wrapper split on it that fast!  I was not a happy smoker!

Cold it is...  But, do what I do.  Smoke in your car!  You gotta start it up every 10-15 minutes to warm things back up a bit, but it works for me.  With wireless interwebs, I can take my laptop wiff me and finish up some work too!

To each his own.  I used to not be a big fan of straight bourbon, but over the past several years it has grown on me.  Gentlemen Jack to me is worth the few extra dollars for the taste.

Damn good idea, I thought about going out in the garage, it was 44 degrees in it last night. I really need to insulate the door, that would help out a lot more than just the insulation that is overhead.  I may just try the car idea.

Yeah, I didn't have enough room, I had 4 that wouldn't go, I gave two of them to a neighbor since he let me drink his beer last night when I ran out.  The other two are in a baggie with humidifier pillow that they shipped with, I will have them smoked in the next day or two.  That sucks that the wrapper split, shit it was cold for it to do that.

Speaking of which, what is the smoke of choice for the cigar smokers on the board?

I'm a big fan of La Gloria Cubana.  The Wavell Maduro is one of my most favored cigars.  I also like Partagas Black Classico; Partagas Spanish Rosado San Augustin; Trinidad Maduro Toro; Almost anything by Fuente; H Upmann Robusto 100.

Agree with the Fuente.  I also like Macanudo Gold Label, Romeo y Julieta Vintage, and Montecristo medium.  I try to keep a variety of all of the above at the house at any given time, but I am up for trying something different is why I ask.

Fine choices all.  Interesting that you should mention Macanudo.  Macanudo Robust, Maduro, and "1968" are three of my favorites in that line.  Gold Label is great cigar just a little too mild for me.
