First Nall goes to work for a trucking company and now

Ensminger takes High School QB coaching job

Published: January 13, 2009

Steve Ensminger has landed on his feet.

And he didn’t have to venture too far from home to make it happen, either.

The former Auburn University assistant will take over as the quarterbacks coach at Smiths Station High School, the Opelika-Auburn News has learned.

“Obviously, we’re thrilled to have him,” Smiths Station head coach Mark Rose said. “He’s a great football coach and a great guy. We just felt like he’s coached high school and we feel like he’d be a great fit on our staff.”

Efforts to reach Ensminger on Tuesday night were unsuccessful.

Ensminger, who spent six seasons at Auburn, took over as the Tigers’ offensive play-caller midway through the 2008 season after Tony Franklin was fired. Ensminger teamed with other assistants to reconfigure Auburn’s woeful offense during the stretch, but was largely unsuccessful.

The Tigers went 1-5 and averaged 296.6 total yards of offense over the final six games.

Ensminger, along with the rest of former coach Tommy Tuberville’s staff of assistants, was told to look for a new job when Gene Chizik was hired in early December. Linebackers coach James Willis was the only Tuberville assistant to retain his job.

Rose, who has coached in Alabama for 14 years, said he is close with many of the former assistants and has worked a number of summer camps with them. A four-year letterman under Pat Dye from 1986-89, Rose just wrapped up his first season at Smiths Station.

“I’ve known (Ensminger) for a while,” Rose said. “I thought it was a great opportunity and he was excited about it.”

Rose was unsure if Ensminger pursued any options at the collegiate level. Before he landed with Tuberville in 2003, Ensminger coached at two different Louisiana high schools from 2000-02.

All told, Ensminger has 24 years of coaching experience.

“I’ve got a bunch of great coaches and I think he’ll fit in great with us,” Rose said. “It’s kind of a different set of circumstances coaching high school and college. He definitely knows the difference.“

Rose said Tuesday night he had yet to tell his team about his newest hire, but some of them have “probably heard it through the grapevine.”
Ensminger will also teach P.E. at Smiths Station, Rose said.

Wow, he couldn't even land a high school HC job? OC?

Sad.

And this proves?

We all knew Fuckfinger was horrible. He was a HS coordinator before he came to AU (ostensibly to get his kid to sign) and he's gone back to what he was all along.  Even when he was here.

This thread is what's pathetic.

Has Greg Knox heard back from Taco Casa yet?  I hear he might be the Asst. Manager.

Yeah.  They gave him a simple assignment as a test.  Draw up the routes for the counter help to get from the counter to the serving window and back.

One of them cut the route off short and dropped the tray in the floor.  A second one went left when she should have gone right and knocked over the drink dispenser.  The third had the tray for a second, but dropped it before he could complete the play.  The fourth kid went long and slammed into the back wall, knocking himself unconscious.

They might still hire him.  The manager blamed it on poor recruiting and said the counter help was young.

Honest prediction?

Tuberville will take this year off and then will bounce up to the pros.  But if he takes a college job he will come back and whip the shit out of AU.

There are actually a few gran lovers on the other site. One guy said he was the biggest reason for AU's rb success and the backs before his arrival weren't as significant (they were alreadygood and not coached up).

I was like, "okay, why didnt tenny snatch him up after the interview?". Looks like he's not a hotcommodity as much as someone who rode running back U as long as he could.

Please don't be a douchebag.

Gran was a quality running backs coach.  He proved it at Ole Miss and he more than proved his worth at Auburn.  More than.

This revisionist history is absolutely fucking SICKENING. It makes me sad that I'm an Auburn fan.

Some of the coaches were good, I admit that.  At the same time, some of the coaches were shitty smelly stinky...while the rest were smelly shitty stinky.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

How about this for revisionist history:  Our offensive staff was well offensive

Taken from another site

Gran - UT interview, no job (the best of the bunch) & probably unfairly being grouped with the others

Ensminger - Smith Station QB coach (what?)

Nall - Truckin n' Stuff

Knox - still unemployed

Franklin - back to hustling HS coaches

As compared to the coaches on defense:

Rhoades - HC at ISU

Willis - retained at AU

Dunn/Price - got jobs at ISU

My reply was in reference to Gran only.  I've made no bones about my disdain for Franklin, Fuckfinger or the Chocolate Elf.  Nall was a pissed off old man at the end.

But if you want to argue that Gran was a crappy RB coach, then we're going to be here a while.  Because I won't let that one slide.  Not only was he a good RB coach, but he was a quality guy.  Not getting a job at Tennessee (and you don't know if they chose not to hire him or the situation wasn't right and he elected to wait) doesn't make one bit of difference.

This argument has never been solely about Gran, it is simply that the current offensive staff that chizik has assembled is on paper a much more talented staff.  The simple fact that all of the current assistants were at least sought after by more than just AU is in and of itself a big step up in perception.

I will go one step further by arguing that the quality of the product put on the field depends much more on the ability of the assitants to coach, rather than the name of the Head Coach.  If the assistants are sub par, the end results will be sub par.

Don't worry I wouldn't step on your toes, mr. king of the whiny assed, soul aching douchebags. I guess it's asking a bit too much of you to accurately interpret what someone is saying before you fly off the handle.

I'm not saying he wasn't a good coach. I'm just saying if he's so fucking great, why hasn't he been hired yet? The posters on the AU site were referring to him as something near the 2nd coming of rb coaches. I took exception to that and still do. That is what I was saying. The tuberville regime has survived everwhere its been by being superior recruiters. The coaching is suspect to say the least on the offensive side. Yes, gran did a good job of turning 4 and five star recruits into successful rb's. Someone should snatch him up any second now.

Woah, I gotta step in on this one, Time out AUTail. How would you prove that even on paper? Tubs was 85-40 with the majority of that staff.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
