I wonder if we can get Tuberville?

In all seriousness, we fucked up. He's the best coach available at present.

i agree.  if auburn waffled on the idea weeks ago they should have done it at that time. tennessee beat us to it.

I've been told that we have a 0% chance of landing Butch Davis, from a guy in the 'biz.'

I think he's happy where he is.

He didn't go to Tennessee when the opportunity knocked (a little dated but relevent):

Butch Davis says he's happy at North Carolina and that he isn't going anywhere...

And he didn't.

We shouldn't be stating who we would want, instead, we should be stating who we think it is.  Auburn already has the HC, from what I've heard. And that he'll be named within this time next week.  I've also been told that the HC has ties to the SEC.  I'm leaning towards 'Champ, Jimbo, Leach, Spurrier.....ummm, Hal Mumme, Woody Woodenhofer.  Maybe Turner Gill (No ties to the SEC), Brent Venables (No ties, I think), Steve Sarkisian (No ties), or Charlie Strong.

I would not be opposed to Jimbo Fisher or Mike Leach. Pederson or Kelly (Cincinnati) would be a step up also. I want a coach that isn't prone to taking his foot off the opponents throat when they're on the ropes. I want our mantra to be "TAKE NO PRISONERS!"

Dude, you are on a roll tonight.  I thought you were actually a semi-decent Bammer poster, until you came back on today and showed your ass in typical cocky Bammer fashion.

Anyway, none of these names excite me.  Most of them "made their name" this year.  I don't see them fitting in at Auburn.

We have tried to shake the proverbial coaching tree already this year by implementing a spread offense into a program that has traditionally been a run first ask questions later type offense.

I ask you, why not shake the tree again?  What the fuck do we have to lose?  Why not do something a little bit different?  Why not do something that might fire us up again?  Seriously, I feel that we are starting over anyway.

I say wait a little longer to see how the NFL season pans out.  Grab a coach from team that runs the ball down their opponents throat.  There's usually a couple of coaches who are available after the season.  I don't have any recommendations, but I'd be willing to compare a fallen NFL coaches resume versus some of the names on this thread.

Am I reaching?

What is it with you and your obsession with being a run first team? Still longing for the days of Vincent "Bo" Jackson with Pat Dye as HC and running the wishbone? and you talk about Bama fans living in the past...By the way the spread is just a formation and many teams run very well out of it (Paul Johnson's option offense is actually a "spread" offense... you should be more concerned with having a balanced attack...if I were AU I would be trying to hire an offensive minded coach since that has been the most inept part of the AU team for years, one who can recruit on the offensive side of the ball...you have the defensive players already and will always have the defensive players to have a great D...I say Turner Gill or Mike Leach...Butch Davis isn't going anywhere, for places to live, Triangle area of NC > than anywhere else.

Paul Johnson's option offense is actually a "spread" offense...

Um...no. Not at all. Thanks for playing.

Have you even seen that formation? It is as bunched up as it gets. I am a fan of his but I don't see him leaving Tech at all.

muschamp has already put one end of the leash around his neck and the other end in brown's hand. Why anyone thinks he is ready for the sec is beyond me. He basically told the world he doesn't think he is ready with his texas deal.

West Virginia ran all over your ass out of the spread...Yeah as I said many people miss understand....Johnson even calls it the spread.  It is basically a four receiver set with one back in the backfield...its a fucking spread offense...just because the slot receivers are moved in, that makes it not a spread? its still a spread

http://huskersforpauljohnson.blogspot.com/2007/10/understanding-paul-johnsons-offense.html

It starts with the name: triple option. Some have called it the "flexbone." Quarterback Lamar Owens said the team calls it "the spread." Just don't call it the wishbone. Reporters and other coaches often have made that mistake.
"And that drives Coach crazy," Navy athletics spokesman Scott Strasemeier said. "It's nowhere close to what the wishbone is."

That's because the wishbone has three backs in the backfield; the triple option has one, with a slotback (or "A-back") lined up next to and behind the tackle on each side of the five-man offensive line.

After the quarterback gets the ball on the snap, he has three basic options in one direction or another: (1) keep it, (2) give it to the fullback or (3) flick it to a slot back.

On any play, any of those players could get the ball, forcing the opposing defense to stick to those four players at all times (the QB, fullback and two slotbacks), plus the single receivers lined up wide on each side.

On paper, the triple option's formation resembles a spread-out run-and-shoot passing offense. With the right personnel – a strong-armed quarterback and fast receivers – Navy could run that offense out of it and pass for a "zillion yards," Johnson said.

...yeah he's not leaving Tech anyway

Muschamp is not going to leave Texas. Why would he? Being officially announced as Mack Brown's replacement has set his place for now.

I have been a big fan of Bobby Johnson's for the past couple of years now and wondered why nobody has grabbed him up. I think the guy could do wonders for a school with better talent. He also already knows the SEC. He is my #1 candidate choice.

Muschamp is not coming back to Auburn not with Jacobs at the helm.

Forget about Davis...he would be my #1 as well , but he is well entrenched at UNC and loves it there. Not gonna happen IMO.

Kelly from Cincy would be a front runner, as would Charlie Strong. I thing Strong has got a hell of a resume and believe me having a black coach would do very....very well for recruiting. I just don't know if the PTB would pull the trigger (which is sad).

Charlie is one of the Coaches....year in, year out that for some doesn't get a Real look at being a HC.  Maybe he likes being a DC?  Kinda like Norm Chow, except that CNC has gotten plenty of looks.

I don't think leach would be so bad. Why? Because he could help keep all of our offensive recruits and perhaps add some. The only way I would want him is if we do something to ensure good defense like keeping tubs around for advice on hires and scheming and such.

If we had the same quality defenses we have had lately and a high powered O, who knows? Can leach adjust his style slightly to go a little more power style spread?

Just a thought. One thing for damn sure, imo, fuck mussdawg, butch davis, and several others I've heard named.

Leach is a Hindenburg hire.

When you evaluate Tuberville, you evaluate his entire body of work.  I don't disagree with that.  But do the same with Leach. His body of work is NUMBINGLY unimpressive. Four losses a year.  We already had that and had it with somebody who looks better, speaks better, dresses better, manages games better and has never in his entire career given up 60 points in a game.

Hiring Leach is the equivalent of Elizabeth Berkley taking that awesome role in Showgirls. It was such a boost to her career.

I'm admittedly a fan of the running game, and that's why I post as such.  Excuse me for supporting the most effective component of our offenses over the years.  I'll try to keep it simple for you, so that you will understand it better:  We've always run to set up the pass.  We've typically recruited offensively for this type of scheme.  We try to change it up this year and it blows up in our face, mostly because (as I've said all year long) we don't have the talent at QB or WR to run the spread effectively.

I just can't get behind Leach because I'm not convinced that he would be able to turn our offense around when implementing his system, even with his coaches coming on board.  They'd have to be god damn miracle workers to make that happen.  I actually agree with your synopsis of our defenses and do believe we will struggle the least (I hate putting it that way) in this area when bringing players on board.  I just will always feel that we should continue to support a pound the ground offense until someone comes in a proves to me that we can run a spread type of formation effectively, but it just won't happen with what we currently have to work with.

I think you have to also look at where he started with texas tech and where they are now. He has built a program that is consistently gooda dn has lost fewer and fewer games. They beat oklahoma last year and texas this year. He will have much more talent to work with at AU than he had to start with at tech and could bring in some big offensive recruits.

Don't get me wrong, there are several others I'd like to hire but I would rather have leach over many of the names I have heard mentioned on this thread.
