Some in Danville cry foul over high school basketball cuts

DANVILLE – Some black community members have accused the Danville High School boys basketball head coach of racial profiling for cutting at least eight black players from an all-black team.

Now they're planning to organize a protest in an attempt to get Coach Gary Tidwell, who is white, removed.

"We need to play hard ball to get some answers," said Frank McCullough, pastor of Mount Olive Christian Church.

But school officials insisted there has been no racial discrimination and said they stand by Tidwell.

"The coach chose the student athletes that he thought were the very best players and would help the team be successful this year," Principal Mark Neil said. "That was the basis of the choice.

"I feel for the ones who did not make the team," Neil said. "It's got to be tough on them and tough for their parents. ... But I don't understand the racial (accusations). The entire team is African-American."

McCullough and Jerry Wilson, pastor of Freedom Missionary Baptist Church, said they got involved after parents came to them complaining that their kids weren't invited to summer basketball camps and a preseason tournament, and were cut from the team earlier this month. They said the parents questioned Tidwell about his selection process, but weren't satisfied with his answers.

Tidwell "said there were five factors he looked at – whether they were coachable, academics, commitment level, behavior and athletic skill," Wilson said. "We found a flaw in that ... None of these boys had a problem with that. But let's just say it was their skill level. You had all summer long to work with them. There were open gyms, but they weren't invited."

"We have racial profiling going on," McCullough said, adding that's the only explanation in his mind. "He took a look at the way the young men wore their hair, and made comments about that and whether he thought they should be hanging out with certain people."

The ministers said they took their concerns to Neil, but weren't satisfied with his response, which he gave them Monday night. "He said he's not going to make a change at this time," Wilson said.

"It's an easy fix," McCullough said, adding Tidwell should reinstate the players.

Oh FUCK them.  You cut a few black kids from an all black team, and because you're white, you're racist?  Those parents need to just shut the fuck up, and understand that their little "superstar" isn't good enough to be on the team.  If they are still upset, they can always go buy their little playa a trophy at what would be the end of the season.

This shit is only going to get worse.

Now see, even without knowing the entire story, this is just a flat-out lie (not to mention the term "profiling" being misused, but that's another story).  All players being black = no chance of racial "profiling".

"If you're looking for sympathy, it's in the dictionary between shit and syphilis."

You guys are freaking racist's if you can't see the obvious racism going on here. Just because they whole team is black does not mean the coach is not being racist. He might have voted for Obama and preferred players that looked "less black".

Kind of off subject:

I graduated from Danville High School....that would be the one in Danville, AL. It is close to Speak, AL, home of the very small Speak High School. Alot of kids that live in the Speake school district (Lawrence County) would go to Danville instead (Morgan County) because Speak is such an old, run down, poor athletically and academically school in a crappy school system. They would use the address of a family member of friend that is inside the Morgan County school district so they could go to Danville. The schools are only a couple of miles apart, but they are so close to each other and have different school districts because they are in separate counties.

I mention this because Speak is playing in the 1A state football finals this weekend. You think the kids that should be going to Speak, but are on the Danville football, who has had a losing record the last few years, are regretting that decision now?

I'm glad that you mentioned the last part there.  I was gonna have to bust your balls a little bit.  I'm not from Speak, but close (hell no, not Lawrence Co) so I will be pulling for them to win the title this week.

Shoot, Speake and Danville treat each other with respect. They are not a rivalry like what we, Danville, has with West Morgan. Because Speak and Danville close, most of the kids are neighbors and good friends with each other. Speake is kind of like the little brother to Danville. Usually has never been able to compete at the same level athletically and surely not academically, which is really said seeing how Danville's academics is only about average at best. A lot of people from Danville will be traveling to B'ham to watch Speake play. The Danville principal is going to excuse any student that wants to travel to the game Friday. That is how close the two communities are.

I'm glad I'm from Prattville. We didn't have any little sister schools. Unless you want to include Autauga Academy. But they were private. And we are still in the championship game.......

So I'll make the trip from Atlanta to see the game on Saturday. It's not every year this happens....

Wait. This is the 4th year out of the last five. Oh well. I'm going anyway.

Anybody else going to B'ham Saturday?

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Back to this for a minute though.
"We have racial profiling going on," McCullough said, adding that's the only explanation in his mind. "He took a look at the way the young men wore their hair, and made comments about that and whether he thought they should be hanging out with certain people."
So, um...A coach doesn't have the right to tell his players not to be hanging out with "certain people"? Like the ones who are probably into drugs and robbing places? In this particular case, 100% of the other players he kept were African American as well, so suggesting race was a factor is beyond laughable. Someone should complain that he only kept black kids on the team. Racist bastard.
