I watched Gulley play earlier this year and saw him last year too. Now granted, this is 1A ball and I saw him against a bunch of slow white boys from Providence. My daughter is a cheerleader at Providence Christian in Dothan. In the game this year, I watched him take the opening kickoff 75 yards for a score....take a handoff and go around left end for 90 and a score...catch a pass out of the backfield and go about 70 for a score and then pick up a punt that was about to roll dead and boogie 76 yards for paydirt.
Now, at this level, it's not uncommon to find one athlete that dwarfs the rest and basically carries the team by himself. Brantley is good but but they're a 6-4 team without him. The most amazing thing about what I described above is...he was never so much as touched. Not one hand on him during any of those runs. And the guy is so NOT a showboat. Every time he hit the goal line, he took a step or two across and casually handed the ball to the ref and jogged off the field. Never saw one "Me, me, me" gesture in either game I saw. And he scored quite a few times last year.
Having said all that, I have no idea how any of that would translate to D1 SEC ball. But, he looks like someone to at least take a long hard look at. Also, it may be hard to get him to play football. My understanding is that football just isn't that big a deal to him. He loves baseball first and foremost.
