2023 Hall of Fame

2023 Hall of Fame
« on: January 25, 2023, 02:13:34 PM »
Rolen voted in by the writers, and McGriff by committee.

Curious if Rolen goes in as a Philly or a Cardinal.

McGriff...  I hope he goes in as a Brave, I certainly remember him more as a Brave than a Blue Jay or Padre...  I think his best years were with the Braves.

So my question to everyone...  Who's the best player not in the hall, or who do you hope gets in that isn't now.  For me, it's Donny Baseball.  If he gets in, it will be by committee like McGriff, as I think he dropped off the writers ballots a few years back.  He was my favorite player growing up.

And..  Does Rolen getting in open the door for Jim Edmonds?

I will also cut any Braves fan who shills for Dale Murphy over this. NOT. EVEN. CLOSE.

Homeruns is NOT the main criteria.  Rolen's WAR is around 70. One of the best fielding 3rd basemen in history too.

That's why I asked about Edmonds. Just as many gold gloves (8).  WAR of 68..  So right there with Rolen.

Agree....avg WAR last 20 years of HOF inductees is 73 so I think Edmonds is definitely in the conversation. Hair under 300 avg and 400 hrs, that many gold gloves, helped teams get to the post season and go far and a very respectable WAR. He tends to meet all the criteria.

Anyone wanna guess Dale's? try 45. My best memories of him were hitting HR's in meaningless games and mostly striking out more than anything.

I know WAR isn't everything but I do think its a big part of the equation.

Dale seems to have gone from MVP type numbers to very pedestrian almost overnight.

4 good years (not great) years between 83-87, all else was pedestrian as it gets after 87. Almost every season was a league leader in SO's. I like Dale. He was a good player for the Bravos....but hes not a HOF'r for a reason.

A good candidate for the Hall of Pretty Good.

Stepping into the way back machine....I was a senior in H.S. and playing baseball at racist Jefferson Davis in Montgomery.  Like most kids that age, I dreamed of playing in the big leagues, but knew it was just that, a dream.  Sports Illustrated put out an issue where they posted the salary of every MLB player.  The top spot at that time was Mike Schmidt, of the Phillies. He was making $2.1 million.  Second and third respectively were Dale Murphy at $1.9 and Bob Horner at I believe $1.6.  I can't recall if anyone else was making a million at that time.

But one thing I do recall, is that even though you saw those astronomical numbers, the dream of playing in the league was never about money.  Never gave it a thought.  It was about putting on that uniform and playing in front of all those people.

I think times may have changed just a smidge.

WAR, what is it good for?

I'm not on the Dale Murphy HOF train either....BUT.....

Scott Rolen .281 BA  2,077 Hits  316 HR  1,287 RBI

Dale Murphy .265 BA  2,111 Hits  398 HR  1,266 RBI

Rolen was a 7 time All Star.  Murphy was a 7 time All Star

Rolen had 8 Gold Gloves.  Murphy had 5 Gold Gloves

Rolen was NL Rookie of the Year.  Murphy was the National League MVP twice.

Murphy was the NL Home Run Leader twice, and the RBI leader twice as well.

Rolen won a World Series.

Honestly, Dale Murphy is just as deserving as Rolen, but then, I was like WUUUUT when they announced Rolen got in.

Right field. 3rd base. Big difference when comparing to the basis for each position as it relates to the hall and where they both hit in the lineup. Rolen was ten times the fielder Murphy was. Not even close homie.

I agree with the esteemed one.

I never had the makings of a varsity athlete. But I worked hard at it because I had that same dream.  I wanted to be able to wear the uniform.  Knowing what I do now? I might have approached it differently.  I was never gonna play. Should have focused on things that mattered.
