It may just be me getting older and my mind misremembering things in recent years. But, I don't recall this many coaches getting the boot before the half way point in the season. So far:
Scott Frost - Nebraska
Herm Edwards - Arizona State
Geoff Collins - Georgia Tech
Karl Dorrell - Colorado
Paul Chryst - Wisconsin
Chryst was a little surprising to me. Yes, they've been very mediocre the last couple of years, and are off to a 2-3 start. But, he had a very good run for about 5 years before that, and it seems that unless there's some other underlying crap going on in the program, they'd ride it out for this year. But, maybe this is the trend.
I have no problem with the huge contracts that coaches and professional players get. The old saying is you're worth whatever the market will bear. Simply put, they wouldn't make the deal if the money wasn't there. But, I have no idea why these college programs paint themselves into a corner with these astronomical buyouts. I think most A&M faithful would love to send Greasy Jimbo packing. Unfortunately, they have about $90 million reasons why they can't. How could you possibly be stupid enough to make a totally one-sided deal like that?
I said it a dozen or more times. Why would Auburn pull such a classic dumbfuck move, and lock themselves in to that buyout for Gus? He won two huge games. Okay. Write the man a big bonus check and say thank you.
These programs should keep it simple, and stop being held hostage by the coaches and their agents. We want you to coach here, and we're willing to pay you $7 million per year. If we decide to let you go during the year, we owe you the balance of that year's salary. If you don't want that deal, I believe we can find someone who will jump on it.
