Phillip Fulmer, who a decade ago brought Tennessee its first national championship in 47 years, will not return as the Vols' coach next year, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

An announcement is being planned for later Monday at Neyland Stadium. The Vols (3-6, 1-5 SEC) have lost four straight games and are in danger of suffering their second losing season in the last four years.

Fulmer, who's won 150 games at his alma mater and is the dean of SEC coaches, met with Tennessee officials Monday morning, and they reached a mutual agreement that it would be best for all parties if Fulmer was not back next season.

There had been increasing scrutiny on Fulmer, who took over full time as head coach in 1993 and has been at his alma mater as a player, assistant coach and head coach for more than 30 years.

The Vols won the national title in 1998 and were one of the top programs in all of college football in the 1990s, but the program hasn't been the same this decade. They've lost 31 games since the end of the 2001 season.

This is another reason an announcement one way or the other needs to be made about Tuberville.  Competing w/ Tennessee is going to get pricey for a new HC.

This is exactly why it might not be the best of years to let CTT go.  Competing with UW, CU and UT in a year when there aren't that many big names floating around looking for HC spots, would make for more problems than looking for a completely new Offensive staff IMO.

Damnit, you beat me to it.  Oh well

The sides also agreed that Fulmer would coach the remainder of the 2008 season.

Chris Low covers the SEC for ESPN.com.

Now I feel better.  :silence:

So, we should make a decision based on what is happening at Tennessee?

Frick that.  Let them be worried about competing with us for a big name coach.  And that goes for Washington and CU, too.

Fire Tuberville now, put the team in the hands of Paul Davis for the rest of the season and let the bidding begin.

Just for the record, I don't give a half shit if Tuberville or a hair lipped Thai boy is coaching next season as long as we win.

You keep finding new ways to impress upon me just how decrepit you really are.

I never saw the film, but I hope you're not comparing me to Drew Barrymore.  I had the good sense to wait until I was thirteen to start club hopping and consuming large quantities of narcotics.

He is old Wes and you can tell from his suggestion on Tuberville why some are suited for shooting and blowing up shit as opposed to the inner workings of multi-million dollar coaching decisions.  Hahahaha.

I mean that in the nicest way possible of course.

What suggestion on Tuberville?  I had no suggestion other than I expect to win next year, whether that is with or without Tuberville.

Ummm, yeah, I then proceeded to say put the team in the hands of an octogenarian that might not even still be alive and then followed it up with an outrageous comment (that involved handicapped Asians, not an easy angle to work into any conversation) about how I did not care if Tuberville was still around next year or not as long as we were winning.  It is known as hyperbole and exaggeration.

Read it all in context, like you instructed townhallsavoy to do with Tuberville's comments yesterday in the paper.

By the way, Jay Jacobs called and wanted to know what you thought about possibly going after Gus Malzahn when Tuberville's time did come to an end.  He was so inspired by your opinion on how Auburn should react to the news from Knoxville.

Yeah he called me after realizing he'd only get exagerations and meaningless hyperbole from anyone else. 'Cause he is an avid reader of TigersX and all. (Thought I'd point out the sarcasm so you don't actually think I'm being serious therefore prompting another "I'm smarter than you" response)

Just havin' fun here. You should try the relaxing thing that everyone tells me about. Its nice. :vn:

I'm not that worried about getting into a bidding war against UT for anyone.  They have a long history of hiring within the family and I wouldn't look for them to stray too far from that M.O. Despite the fact that he and Fulmer are very good friends, I wouldn't be blown away if UT lured Cutcliffe away.  He's apparently doing a Spurrier-esque job right now.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."
