Bumpity bump.
A couple of observations and questions. Here we sit in late June and the normal start for our beloved college foosballz is just weeks away. I've got this feeling (Down in my plums) that there will be nothing normal about it. So much up in the air with the Covids and the protests/rioting/looting/killing. I mentioned in another thread that I'd been reading the preseason mags, which is routine every year for me. It's almost an escape to read the write ups, heights and weights, starters returning etc. I want to imagine that things will go on as usual, but unfortunately, I can't see that being the case.
The Cyrus Virus may make it all a moot point and shut everything down. Our local sports talk show this morning was talking about 3 high schools around the State who just shut down all workouts due to numerous players testing positive. Will they or colleges even be able to play? Will there be fans in the stands if they do? A limited number of fans? Would you even risk going?
What's also at play are the social issues, for lack of a better term. There's a lot of shit going on out there to say the least. I just read where a soccer club in Tulsa scrapped the national anthem for "This land is your land." Is that the beginning of the end for that tradition at sporting events? Don't think for a second that it's not a very real possibility. Auburn has already formed a couple of committees in knee jerk response to all that's going on. Yes, I said knee jerk, because they've yelled from the mountain tops about how diverse, equal and inclusive they are, but now it seems they're suddenly "woke" and feel the need to do something. What, I don't know. But I imagine taking down monuments, renaming buildings and yes, cutting the national anthem are all on the table for discussion.
Would that mean anything or have any effect on you? Do you care? What if players kneel or time is taken out to pay tribute to Black Lives Matter on the Jumbotron XL 3000? It's a sensitive issue and a very real question. I'm afraid the proverbial battle lines are being drawn as we speak (type) and I could definitely see big money donors pulling out and walking away. What about you? If you were at the game and it happened, would you join in? Would you shrug it off as a passing phase and say, "Let's play football"? Would you walk out in disgust?
We love our sports and I don't think it's a stretch to say that for most of us, college football is at the top of the list. I think I may be a little different in that while it's definitely my #1, I do follow the NBA, MLB and NFL. But I honestly haven't missed the NBA at all, and I'm pretty much over baseball not happening. I'm really not sure how I'll feel if they start messing with college football. I'm all about traditions and if they start injecting all these social issues into it and changing things up, I may just take up kayak fishing and spend my Saturdays doing that.
Thoughts?
