18-year-old leads police on chase with speeds up to 144 mph



A Hartselle 18-year-old is behind bars after leading police on a chase with speeds reaching 144 mph.

Gavin Tyler Shields is charged with two counts of reckless endangerment and multiple traffic citations. Morgan County deputies said they encountered Shields driving a car travelling 105 mph on Highway 36 around 12:43 a.m. Sunday morning. Deputies attempted to stop the Ford Mustang as it reached speeds of 144 mph, ran traffic lights, passed on a double yellow line and turned off its lights.


Shields was finally stopped at Reeves Peach Farm after additional law enforcement set up spike strips ahead of him.

He was arrested at the scene and transported to the Morgan County Jail with bond pending. The other occupants of the car were released to their parents.
