Well, I Tried It
« on: November 26, 2019, 02:53:10 PM »
So, the short-lived war between Chick-Fil-A and Popeyes over their chicken sandwiches, seems to have died down. Over the past couple of months, there were numerous reports of people fighting and even getting stabbed over trying to get at the new Popeyes bird in a bun.  I told you guys about last year in Auburn when I was held up in traffic for about a half hour because the drive-thru line at the Chick had spilled out into the road and backed up for blocks.  Now folks, I love me some chicken of all kinds.  Fried, grilled, baked, nuggets, sammiches, on a stick etc.  But if I you're waiting that long on a chicken sammich and it doesn't look and taste like Amanda Cerny's shaved beaver....

Image result for Amanda Cerny gif

...then you've got issues that neither counseling nor medication can help with.  So I was passing by the Popeye's today and there was little or no line, so I thought I'd see what the fuss was all about.  Ordered one plain, or regular.  They have regular or spicy.  I didn't want to sauce it up because I wanted to compare the actual chicken itself to the hundreds of Fil-A sandwiches I've had over the years.

Comparably priced with the Popeye's sandwich being about .20-.30 cents more.  The biggest difference is size. (Ain't it always?) The Popeye's chicken slab was a good bit bigger with, at the risk of sounding ghey, a much lighter, fluffier batter.  That's where the comparison ends.  Taste-wise, it was a big nothing burger.  As I said, they do have the spicy version and I'm sure if I had doctored this one up, it would have been much better.  But I normally eat a Chick-Fil-A sandwich as is because the flavor stands on its own.  I wouldn't do that again with the regular Popeye's.  I will try the spicy at some point but right now, Chick-Fil-A gets awarded the points from this judge.

Would you believe I tried it last week in newnan? Gotta know what the competition is doing.

It was “ok”.

Some red flags/highlights:

1. I asked for spicy. Got regular.

2. I don’t speak jive. The employees did. This was a problem. Seriously. It was a circus behind the counter. The service was awful.

3. I got axed if “dis yo order?” Twice. After I already got my order. And was getting my drink. Like, what??

4. The chicken filet was big. But somewhat plain without any condiments. Not the best flavor. The side by side pickles seemed to be a complete ripoff of cfa.

5. Best part of my meal was the mashed potatoes. The gravy was on point. Credit there.

Popeyes is bottom barrel. But they should stick to being kfc and churches competitor. Not chick fil a’s. I personally think they do cheap bone in fried chicken better than other things on their menu.

One of the Popeye's here is one I pass by regularly so I'll stop in for lunch occasionally and just get one breastess and a drink.  While original recipe KFC is still my go-to with the franchised bird, I like Popeye's better than most others.  I find Church's, Bojangles etc. to be bland.

On the times you come down through the Wiregrass, check out Big H in Eufaula.  On the main drag on the left as you head this way.  It's a dump but they serve up a mighty fine piece of bird.  Taliban Snags loves it and makes me stop every time.

KFC is nostalgia chicken for me.  It's not that good, but it is unique. It takes me back.  When I was growing up it was my grandmother's once-a-week splurge.  Just me and her and some greasy fried original with mashed potatoes, cole slaw and some biscuits.  There's not one around here, but if there were I'd probably hit it maybe once a month.

Church's is broke-ass-down-to-my-last-penny chicken.  When I was first out on my own, drank a lot and didn't spend the little bit of money I had very wisely, I could dig through couch cushions and scrape up enough change for a Church's leg and thigh meal.  Was about $2 if I remember right. And Church's was within walking distance. I avoid it now because it makes me think of that time.

Popeye's is hit or miss. And the statements about the service are 100% accurate.  It's mostly bad.  When you can get waited on you have to speak a different language. You've got about a 35% chance of getting what you ordered even then. It is the only place around here I can get called "sweet baby" while my order is being butchered, though. The sandwich?  Eh.  It's okay.  Not great, not life altering, not something I'd make a special trip for.

I'd put the Popeye's sandwich in the same ballpark as Arby's, Hardees or Wendy's.  Of those three, Hardees is probably better. Well, it used to be.  They've changed the chicken patty and it's not quite up to the level it was back in the 90s when a chicken and cheese from there was a damn fine meal. Popeye's is maybe a notch above those, but the fact is that once the new wears off they'll start screwing that up the same way they screw up the chicken half the time (old grease, stale breading, etc.) and nobody will ever remember it.

Chick-Fil-A?  Gold standard.  I've never gotten a bad order, never had bad service.  Food is always fresh. Food always cooked perfectly. Staff is unwaveringly friendly.  Well, there is one exception to that. There's this one young guy at the place where I always get breakfast who resolutely refuses to provide the iconic "my pleasure" CFA response. He was usually the one standing outside taking the order on the pad. He'll say "mmm hmmm" or "okay then" or "you can pull on up" or nothing. But never, ever, ever, ever "my pleasure."  It's noticeable enough that I've tried to prod him to get him to do it by thanking him for multiple actions during the order.  And he flat out won't do it. I even asked him once "no, my pleasure?" and he just laughed and said "we good."   Still, I could do CFA a couple of times a week even though the menu is extremely limited.

I actually tried the spicy one yesterday myself.  We ordered out while working on the year end close.
I thought it was a quality sammich.  It's not a spicier batter though...they just put a spicy sauce on it.

Last night when I got home and realized what I had done I immediately said 10 Hail Mary's and washed my mouth out with Holy Water though.  Don't want the Jesus chicken mad at me.

If there wasn't so much hoopla over it and I had just walked in the Popeye's and tried the chicken sandwich, I'd have probably thought it was pretty good.  I guess I was just anticipating a tasty explosion of super delicious poultry goodness.

So, minus the poultry part, it sounds like your expectations were much the same as you had for my ejaculate.

If you’re being serious about the lack of my pleasure, let the operator know. They take that very serious. Operators number should be in the triage when entering the store by his picture.

Chicken re-visit.

Tried the spicy sammich at lunch today at Popeyes.  Now, that one I will order again.  Pretty tasty and just enough pop to let you know you're having some spicy bird.

On the Chick-Fil-A scene, I went there last week and ordered a meal.  The cashier handed me my receipt and said, "This one's on us."  Snags was happy.
