« on: September 02, 2019, 10:11:37 PM »
Wow. No in-game thread.  And now no weekend review.

I guess I'll take this burden on just to hear myself talk.

The Good:

1. Alabama - Same old same old.  Tua is an absolute lock as the number one pick in the draft (I don't see it), Saban, blah blah blah.  Being an Alabama fan must be the most boring existence in the history of mankind.

2. LSU - Played a glorified high school, but looked better than I expected.  Never thought much of Joe Burrow, but he looked sharp and in mid-season form.  The Bengal offense looks much more polished and dangerous than it has in many years.  Of course they play Texas Saturday and could easily crap the bed, but they looked pretty legit to me.

3. Auburn - The only team in the SEC that really played anybody of note.  Struggled early, defense got its legs and pulled out a win.  Should go a long way in helping this team's psyche.  Let me just say, however, that the routes Auburn's receivers run are really bad.  Teams are going to force Nix to beat them through the air and unless AU comes up with something better than what we've seen out of Malzahn in terms of the routes?  Gonna get burned.

4. Texas A&M - Not really impressed despite their opening week win.  But they did win convincingly so they stay in the good column.

5.  Georgia - Meh.  Vanderbilt was due for a letdown. I did find it amusing that three UGA quarterbacks led their teams to wins Saturday -- Fields at OSU, Fromm at UGA and Eason at Washington. Not really sure how good UGA is going to be in a really weak East.

The Bad:

1. Florida - Beat Miami in one of the ugliest CFB games in quite a while.  That's a team not ready for the stage. Flippy Franks is trash.  Blah.

2. Vandy - Dropoff from last season and going to get worse I think.

3. Kentucky - Another downward trend. Last season might have been their peak.  Dinked around with Toledo and could easily have lost.

4. Mississippi State - Didn't do much to brag about in a ploddingly clumsy win over Louisiana.  Barked about this year being their year in the offseason.  Nah.

5. Arkansas - Another lackluster win over a lackluster team.  Left them as bad since they won, but I only see one potential SEC win on their schedule.

The Ugly:

1. Ole Miss - Stink. Stank. Stunk.  Anybody who loses to them should be ashamed.

2. South Carolina - The Will Muschamp experiment is going really well.  Nothing like losing your opener to the head coach you were supposed to replace at Texas, after he hasn't coached in six years and took over a team that won three games last season.

3. Tennessee -  Penis Pruitt.  Wow. What a disgrace.  How did Auburn lose to this team last season?  Or ever?

4. Missouri - Bo Nix or Kelley Bryant?  Kelley Bryant or Bo Nix?  Good call all the way around for Auburn. Lost to Wy-freaking-oming.  Ugh.

Other notes:
a) Notre Dame looks like Notre Dame.  Overhyped, oversold. A mediocre team that would go 6-5 in pretty much any league.

b) Florida State:   Call it.  Time of death?  Saturday night, about the time Boise scored to go ahead.  Today the FSU coach wondered aloud if his team was properly hydrated.  That program is currently dead.

c) Ohio State will be fluffed for the remainder of the season and Justin Fields will be plugged for the Heisman repeatedly.  But they don't play anybody and will STILL lose a meaningless game in October.

d) Michigan:  Mehchigan. I think they lose at least two, maybe three.

e) Clemson: No contest in the flaccid ACC. Will snooze to the playoffs.

f) Texas: They're back. Again. Until Saturday when I think they get their steer pushed in.

g) Nebraska: South Alabama should have beaten them.  Two defensive scores and a punt return for a TD kept them from sharing the dais with Tennessee when the Oscar for worst weekend loss is handed out.

h) Oklahoma:  Jalen Hurts looked like a far, far superior quarterback to Tinkle Tunkabaloolah.  Polished, poised, unflappable.  I saw that dude make reads, throw darts and run when he had to.   I wish Auburn would drive four dump trucks of money over to Norman and buy their quarterbacks coach.  If you asked me to pick the Heisman winner after week one, Hurts would be my first pick and it wouldn't be close.  Honestly?  He looked better than either Mayfield or Murray to me.  Of course he could go back into a shell again, but the young man looked like he had benefited from some serious coaching since he left the Craphole.

Spot on with route running.  It's always been that way under Malzahn.  If they run, run  run like he wants the offense to do, any pass route is 100% more effective.  If they're not running well, the passing game is garbage.  Loved how the D wound up adjusting.  AU outgained them and had more first downs but you would have thought Oregon dominated the way the game was going.

There were a couple of back-breaker passes that Nix missed.(33 wide open) As he settles in and hits the open guys, things will change for the good.

I was upset that again, Gus had no answer for 7 in the box.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Let me add a #5 to the ugly column.

5.  Pac 12 - Oregon played a whale of a game and by all rights deserved to win.  However, their coarch made too many mistakes late in that game imo.  I won't say he got out coached, because we know that couldn't be true, but he's not quite ready for prime time.
Washington?  Maybe, especially with the FUGA retread.
Stanford?  Who knows?  They always play good disciplined football, but never have quite enough athletes to challenge ultimately.
Utah?  Looked good against the Mormons, but don't think they can hang with Oregon or Washington.
Washington State?  Will probably win 9 or 10 games, but not a playoff contender.
Arizona State?  Will make some noise, but no chance to get in the playoffs.
California?  Nope
Colorado?  Nope
Oregon State?  Hahahaha...nope
Arizona?  They looked as drunk as their coach probably was throughout their opener.
UCLA?  Chip Kelly should have stayed in Philly or wherever he was last.
USC?  Nope.  No way.

Not that he dominated or anything, but it was good to see Owen Pappoe flying around Saturday night.  He had 4 solo tackles and seemed to be in the mix on a lot of plays.

I'm in agreement with K on looking back and asking how in the Sam Hill did UT beat us last year?  They had -2 yards rushing in the second half against Ga. State. All I recall about that game was it seemed like we had them in 3rd and long all the time and the QB kept flinging it long and have the receivers jump up and pull one out of that ass to convert.

Pappoe looked really good dropping into coverage...big hitter too, as is Britt.

I never hated on Stidham really, but other than two games his first season the guy looked the whole time like he was playing to protect his future.

Bo Nix may not be polished yet, but that kid looks like he wants to play ball.  I don't think we'll ever see the patented Stidham/Moseley cowering turtle move from him.  He's going to make some mistakes, but they won't be for the reasons I think Stidham made them.

Why, though, is there this uneasy feeling in the back of my guts that Gus is going to screw him up?

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Two things

a) South Carolina and Tennessee need to check the balls because they showed none. At least Ole Miss and Mizzou put up a fight;

ii) I still believe this team struggles against LSU, fUGA, and Bama, but they should be able to deal with everything else. However, it being Gus, we are going to dead brain into a loss we shouldn't this year. (Probably Kentucky or Miss. St.) 8-4 is still a good mark for this bunch.

The loss to UT last year was one of the most disgusting, disheartening things I’ve ever seen.  It was as soul destroying as anything from the Barfield era, Bowden’s last season, the goodbye years of Tuberville, Chizik or Jordan.

I can’t recall a time in my life I was ever more embarrassed.  Well, about a football game. And to top into off? I was IN Tennessee when it happened.

I would have fired Gus on the spot.  Would have punched him in the face at midfield.

Have a hard time seeing anything that could come close to that.  It made me not care. Haven’t completely gotten over it.

My point was really directed more at the fact that we don't play Kentucky this year.  So, I'm thinking that one might sting a little more.  So....yeah.
