I'll take the Stro's in the AL West. Have to go with the Cubs in the Central. Darvish is back and healthy and they added Cole Hamels, who was pitching well. Plus, they won 95 games in what had to be considered kind of an "off" year. The Cards are interesting. I recognize about 3 names on the entire pitching staff. I'm sure Jar has 100% better intel than I do on that. But if Goldmember, Fowler and Ozuna do what they get paid to do, that could be a verily dangerous club.

Braves: I'll take em' just because they won it last year in an extremely weak division. They did exactly squat to bolster the pitching staff but the addition of Josh Donaldson gives me half chub. I wish they had dealt Dansby Swanson and a couple of prospects for someone worth a shit, though. He makes that half chub go into scared turtle mode.

Checking out the Bravos salaries and I'm not getting it. I understand paying Josh Donaldson and Freddie Freeman ($23 and $21 mil respectively)Proven vets that may wind up in the HOF one day if they stay consistent. So guess who comes in 3rd and 4th on the roster? Pitchers Kevin Gausman ($9.3m) and 36 year old, Darren O'Day ($9m) WTF??? Hey AU1, it looks like O'Day was a Bird for a while. Is he worth that?

Nick Markakis was their most productive bat last year. They released him to free agency, then signed him back at $4m. That's a steal. Same with picking up Brian McCann for $2m. He's 35 and on his last leg but should provide quality and experience to platoon at catcher.

The young guns of Acuna, Jr., Albies, Comargo and Swanson remain at what I assume is the league minimum of $575K. Enjoy it while you can ATL, cause' you're about to open the check book.

On another note, it looks like Manny Machado and the Padres are going to hook up to the tune of $30m a year for 10 years. At least that's what was being reported earlier today.

That Machado deal is crazy. And he can opt out after 5 years, so in theory, he could be a free agent at age 31, also.

So what's Harper going to get? 10/320? And I can bet he would put in a 5 year opt out, too.

And I wish the Cards would offer Harper that deal, 10/320, but front load it. First year, 40/M, and then come down from there. If he opts out after 5, you've in theory had him for his most productive years. If he stays, then you are freeing up cap room every year.

Supposedly, the Padres farm system is loaded with young talent. This could be something where they may suck the first year or two of his deal, but slowly start getting good, like Houston.

I'm torn, torn like an old sweater on Harper. The biggest upside for him is that he's what, 26? So, obviously he's hitting his prime and you have to think the next 4-5 years will be his best. But, he has been underwhelming to me. Maybe that's more because of the over-the-top hype that's followed him since he hit the league. So far in 7 years, he's averaged 26 homers and 74 RBI while batting .279.

Do I want the guy on my team? Oh hellz to the yes!!! But unless I'm the Yankme's, the Red Sox or the handful of teams with unlimited cash, I'm not stroking that $35m check every year for one guy.

Compare his career stats to Harper's. He's averaging 26 HR and 89 RBI with a .297 average. And you got him for less than half what Bryce is going to command? Jeebus!

But we all know these teams could afford 30M on one guy.

Current payroll: Cubs at 210M, Cards at 153M, Braves at 109M, Os at 61M. They all could spend 30M.

Especially when you realize that revenue (for 2017 - only site I could find):
Cubs - 457M
Cards - 319M
Braves - 336M
Os - 252M

He's in the last year of his contract, so Arizona figured to get something for him. Cards are hoping that they can sign him long term after the season, look how well that worked out with JHey.. (although it did work out for Scott Rolen and Matt Holliday).

Doing the quick Chizad math, the Braves sold just over 2.5 million tickets last year at an average of $32.00 a pop. That comes to right at $80mil. Take the concessions and ATL gear sold at the stadium and you more than cover their payroll with attendance alone.
