Mack Watson Brown 3 years after retirement > Gus
Fixed it.
Here's something to gnaw on.
Doug Barfield got five years. His record over those five was 29-25-1 with a 15-14-1 (.533 WP if you give him the tie, .500 WP without) record in the SEC.
Now let's look at gloomy gus. If we accept that his first season was an anomaly (and it was) he's 40-25 over the last five years, 21-19 in the SEC (.525 WP). Where do the 11 extra wins come from? Expanded schedule with luminaries like Alabama State, Jax State, teams we can't remember.
Barfield never got AU near the SEC title. Never beat Alabama. He did beat Georgia twice and tie them once in one of the gutsiest AU games I've ever seen. Orange jerseys. William Andrews inches short of a TD as the first half expired -- and if they'd had video replay back then AU wins that game over a Top 10 UGA squad. We denied them the Sugar Bowl.
Gus isn't as bad as Barfield, but the situations are similar. Bama running roughshod over the competition and the rulebook. Georgia a barking nuisance and some pretty good teams. A wealth of talent. Barfield's Auburn teams had William Andrews, James Brooks, Joe Cribbs, Frank Warren, Byron Franklin, Reese McCall, Sedrick McIntyre, Freddie Smith, Edmund Nelson, Chester Willis, Clifford Toney...
You ask me to list Auburn's coaches in order of greatness?
