Kansas Football
« on: November 08, 2018, 08:15:14 AM »
Since Auburn's season is a trash can fire on the corner of Rocky's apartment and the church he swings by on the way to a fight, I figured I'd toss this out there.

It appears Kansas AD Jeff Long is going after Les Miles to resurrect the Jayhawks of the gridiron.

I think it's a mistake.

1) Les has been out of coaching for three years and A LOT has changed in that time. Moreover, the last gig he had went south because he refused to adapt and was intent that Michigan single wing smashmouth football would still win big.

b) Kansas is never going to be elite but they can be competitive. How were they before? They ran an offense that, at the time, wasn't something other teams dealt in and it created match up advantages. Since then, the Big 12 is all in on air raid, spread option, multiple, high-speed score machines. Not saying they need to run the triple option or wishbone or A11 offense, but Kansas needs to find a wrinkle they can operate from and create a sense of "fun" there because it's the only way they are going to get a couple of playmakers to consider spending any time in Lawrence to try and do something on the football field. Les is not a guy for innovation.

III) They need to take a long look in the mirror and ask what they really want and expect as a program. From my point of view, they should approach this they way Iowa does in terms of expectation.

What do you think?

You should tune in to Mike Leach pressers. Those are never dull.

Agree. And if I could alternate those two shows I would definitely consider purchasing the premium five dollar package.

What is your infatuation with Leach?  He’s a novelty coach who is better at vocal absurdity than he is at coaching.  Not even that funny.  Not championship caliber.

Wasn't claiming that at all. I find his musing fun and interesting. He's not a coach-speak dead-eyes machine. That's rare these days. He's also innovative as hell. Makes Gus's "genius" look a fiver year old with a broken crayon trying to paint a Toyota.

Back to Kansas.

Anyone else think Les can do anything there other than what they've done?

Nope.  Gotta' find a way to attract D1 athletes there first.  And even if he does, he refused to keep up with the times regarding offensive schemes.  Even knowing his job was on the line, and even being told to change it up, he refused and got canned.  You won't ever be able to get enough athletes to run right at people and be successful in the Big 12.

He has a genuine - even if flawed - trump quality to him to me. He’s honest to a fault. He’s who he is and doesn’t deviate. Dude will live or die by his philosophy. Something about all of that I like.

I liked Miles.  Didn’t think he was a cheater.  Until he started feeling like his job was on the line every week he coached like he had a suitcase full of don’t give a fuck.
Also felt he was real. He cared about his players. Was loyal to them — to his own detriment.

He came from the Little 12.  He can win there.

I feel the same way about miles as well. Quirkiness aside I admire how real he seemed.
