He just doesn't get it.  I know you haven't watched all of our games, but go watch the end of the Southern Miss game last week.  When the game ended he has a big ol smile on his face and is clowning.  I'm not saying you have to be a prick like Saban and be angry all the time, but Gus had no business being happy after that game.

We looked like dog shit and our coach is mugging and clowning.  Saban would have chewed ass after a win like that.  That's the difference to me.

But I'm fully 100% convinced he will be ours for at least the next 5 years.  So just expect 7-9 win seasons.
I don’t like the constant dissatisfaction Saban expresses.  He’s the exception because that method typically can’t sustain itself.  When it cracks it implodes.

But I also hear he’s different inside the program than he is to the outside. The kids who play for him understand that if they do things the way he wants they have a chance to be successful, to win.  He’s proven that his way works. Everybody inside the program buys in or they leave.

I can’t stand him but it works.  If he were ours I would love the method probably.  Maybe.

Gus doesn’t have that.  You don’t have to have it to be moderately successful.  You have to have some of it to be elite.  To be excellent.

I know coaching high high school softball isn’t the same.  And I was no Saban.  But I learned not to coddle. Not to accept excuses.  To practice perfection.  My girls hated it at first.  Their parents wanted me hung.  I’d end up in the principal’s office once a week with an angry parent because I was “too hard on Cyndi”.  The principal got tired of it but I wasn’t abusive to the kids, I wasn’t being unfair.  So he let me have rein but told me it better work.  I accepted that and told him if we didn’t get better he wouldn’t have to cut me, I’d do it myself.  We were a historically bad program.  Won twice as many games in my first season than they had in the previous five combined.

It took five years for that ethic to wear off after I left and a crop of “be their buddy” coaches followed.

I don’t think Gus gets it either. How could he?  Only a coach for a year before we overpaid him.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Yeah but Gus doesn't seem to fuck with the defense, so I'm hopeful.

The hell you say.

His ineptness on the other side keeps them on the field 75% of the game.

Gus Malzahn is the problem. 4th and 1 at the Southern Mississippi 6, Gus goes for the FUCKING FIELDGOAL...which was the smart move, because our OLine can't get a GODDAMN 1 YARD PUSH AGAINST GARDENDALE HIGH SCHOOL'S DLine.

We have a 6A HS offense, with a D1 top tier defense (the secondary is fairly inexperienced, but they're making plays. They're getting a little better each game, of course they've nearly played an entire season only halfway through).

Steele can own the failings of his defense that are overwhelmingly caused by the failings of the head coach's offense. Malzahn just doesn't get it.
Stidham is playing erratic and is missing open receivers and it's magnified when he's not being harassed. Our three top backs all have better than respectable averages per carry but that doesn't reflect the times they are stopped dead in their tracks by our lack of execution up front combined with a predictable play call.
Still no intermediate pass game beyond the opening throw to Brown and another later to Shenker. Something might get positive yards and we never try it again, same as it ever was.

Here we are again.  Gus has 1 good year (last year), and now we are gonna have 2-3 Gus years.  I think GF is right that Gus will be with us for the next couple of years but I don't think it will be 5.  In the 2020 season, Gus will pull out another good year.  In the past, that translated to a contract extension with Jacobs.  Hopefully, with Green behind the wheel, he see's through this bullshit and tells Gus to kick bricks.  Buckle up boys, right now we are no better than Miss St. occasional flash in the pan.
