First Scrimmage Today
« on: August 09, 2018, 11:53:31 AM »
The War Eagles are supposed to hold their first scrimmage this morning.  The biggest issues are settling on 5 starters for the O-line and the RB rotation.  (Translation: Which poor sap will be run into the ground?  Then who is the next one up?)

I'm far more concerned about getting the O-line set and let them work together until the season opens.  From what I read, Malzahn said he wants to get that worked out after this scrimmage, get it settled and go with it.  Also read that Lindsey said there will be nothing flashy today.  A ton of running to see how they react when they get tired and how the backs handle pass blocking assignments after toting the ball a bunch of times.  (Translation:  AL dot  I am a gay twerker that has no balls!!!!  I also have no idea how to use the quote function to post stories, so I annoy the piss out of others.  I like male genatalia in and around my mouth. posts 10 pieces on how far ahead the defense is over the offense)

Ultimately, I just want the Long Snapper position solidified.

Notes
GUS MALZAHN said things:
-- 100-play scrimmage, split between 1st, 2nd, 3rd team.
-- 8 reps live punt, 5 reps live field goals
-- Defense had three turnovers, sound slike mostly interceptions
-- Offense had "some explosive plays"
-- Joey Gatewood went live
-- Calvin Ashley suffered a head/neck injury that required he go to the hospital for "precautionary measures." Malzahn hopeful to know more soon.
-- Noah Igbinoghene was held out, belief is he'll be back this next week. Marquis McClain was also held out and is day-to-day.
-- Running backs were "pretty equal" with carries. Kam Martin was first.
-- Mike Horton spent "close to half the time" at center along with Kaleb Kim with 1st/2nd teams. Tucker Brown got in as well.
-- Jeremiah Dinson scrimmaged but was in an orange jersey.
-- Jayvaughn Myers was who made "probably the best play of the scrimmage" with an interception.
--- John Broussard Jr. and Traivon Leonard had the other two INTs, according to Deshaun Davis.

John Broussard?  Must have bounced off the receiver's helmet and ricocheted 10 yards behind him.  They call it, "The Neiko".

I'm guessing the TE position goes uncovered even in our team scrimages. That Gus is tricky I tell you.

So people CAN be taught to catch a football?

If so,  perhaps our offensive linemen can be made surly, nasty and downright hateful.

Well. This is JUST one catch. He did have like 3 out of 20 he caught last season. So I am not calling it doable just yet!

Here's a snippet copy/pasta'd from a 247 piece on Stidham throwing it around more gooder in the scrimmage. Emphasis all Tarheel's, but the emphasized part gives me partial chub.  Back shoulder throws are almost impossible to defend.  No one does it better than A-A-Ron Rodgers.  If Stidham can get that hooked up with someone like Nate Craig-Myers...damn!

"If you could see the scrimmage, you would think he's practiced every day since the spring," middle linebacker Deshaun Davis said. "They made some big throws down field, protecting the back shoulder. He was very accurate today. He looked good in the pocket. I think we probably would've sacked him a couple times, but the coaches they were letting him get some downfield throws. When they were able to get the ball off, they were able to complete it. So hats off to those guys. On defense, we've got to play better, but the back shoulder throw in college football — or any level of football — is a hard throw to defend, and Jarrett can throw it perfectly."

I think I just peed myself a little over this. This tells me Gus has let Lindsey take over.
When is the last time you saw a Gus offense with a back shoulder throw? that's right, when that offense was run by someone else! (Clemson killed us with that throw!)

Not to burst your bubble chub, but it's hard to throw a perfect back shoulder throw from the ground.
