Gus......

https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/auburns-gus-malzahn-im-a-football-coach-not-a-ceo

Maybe this works, but it doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence.  It checks off my two biggest criticisms:

1) Learning on the job
2) Good coordinator but not good at the things that go into being a HC in the SEC

Lost 9 of 11 SEC games...that hurts.

This is what I was afraid of when he was hired...and then 2013 happened. I think now that 2013 was more lightening in a bottle than what's to be expected.

So is the "they were just lucky" criticism from 2013 true? Is that all it was? A flash?

No.

But it was his first year.  He was hired in December.  He had a roster full of players who knew him as a coordinator.  He was fortunate to get a transfer from Georgia who wanted to play QB but was a DB. Think about how awful that team might have been without Marshall.  He had stable and veteran OL.  He had talented veteran RBs.  All he did his first season was run the offense.  Nobody knew or cared who Brett Flashlee was.

Being a head coach didn't come into play until that first season was over and he had to do HC things.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I've said a couple of times recently that I'll feel better about this upcoming season if I know that Malzahn is truly going to take the offense back over completely.  Get back to running things at the HUNH tempo he made his name on.  I also said it looked like he tried to delegate too much responsibility to Rashlee and when things went south with both QB's, there was no getting it back.

I see this as him admitting a mistake but more importantly, realizing how hot his seat is getting.  So, he's going to make sure it's done his way regardless.  What else can you ask of him at this point?

I realize that what he said about QB is true. It wasn't "just" the QB position that sucked last year. But, it was a major part of it. I think the early part of the season, the defense lagged about as much as QB.

Regardless, I didn't see anything in A Day (not that we necessarily would) to make me feel much better about QB--other than the surfer looks more healthy and somewhat faster. Whoopeee!

The defense is going to be better. We've said that for 10 years I guess but I really believe it more than ever. We are going to have a really good D line. Improved backers and db's. We've recruited well and transferred well.

Potential Problem: Without an hellacious running QB, the HUNH is going to put added stress on a young and developing defense.

I would rather see us go to conservative run game and at least slow our 3 and outs down, IF we see early on that the HUNH is doing damage.

Okay, they had a defensive back/QB transfer to AU in 2013.  Guess who turned him into the right QB to run his system?  So, what part of taking a team coming off one of the worst seasons in Auburn history and taking them to within 13 seconds of a national championship was not damn good coaching?  Lightning in a bottle?

2010 was all Cam.

At some point you have to look at the entirety of his work to determine if he is, in fact, a good head coach or not.

You've proven what those naysayers are saying. It was a blip because once HC duties kicked in, the downhill slide did as well.

Gotta say I have a tendency to lean with this.  He is going back to what he knows come hell or highwater.

Problem with this is it may work short term, will it work long term is the question I have.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

When I said short term vs long term, was more talking about his coaching style of being only on the offensive side of the ball and not being a CEO.

Funny thing is, that's what I thought he was doing last year with Muschamp.

bumpitty bump...

Copypasta'd this blurb from a dot I am a gay twerker that has no balls!!!!  I also have no idea how to use the quote function to post stories, so I annoy the piss out of others.  I like male genatalia in and around my mouth. piece following up on Malzahn's statement that he's not a CEO.  Have no idea how this season will turn out but this further solidifies in my mind, the notion that being a CEO and delegating play calling and control of the offense was as much a part of the problem as our QB woes last year.  Whatever happens, I'm glad to see that Malzahn is going to get back to what he does best and we don't have to wonder who, what and why?  It's his baby.

"I think coach Malzahn's always reminded me of a Steve Spurrier," tight ends coach Scott Fountain said. "Steve Spurrier's always been involved with the offense and I think that's who coach Malzahn is. I'm excited to see him to take more ownership in that. I think that's going to be big for us. That's what he does best."

Running backs coach Tim Horton said Malzahn "has always been very involved" in the offense.

"He should be, " Horton said. "He's a great offensive coach, a great offensive play caller."

Malzahn's hands-on approach with the offense is nothing new. Offensive line coach Herb Hand saw much of the same when working with Malzahn at Tulsa in 2007-08.

"For me it was déjà vu all over again," Hand said. "Spring ball was. He's very involved in the day-to-day operations. One of Gus' is being able to see the big picture of things, offense, defense, special teams, managers, strength staff, equipment, trainers.

"He's hired guys ... that are going to take care of (the defensive) side and his focus has been on what he really loves to do, which is just coaching football on a daily basis as well. He's been very involved, whether it's practice planning, installation, coaching the details of things."

Malzahn believes he can prevent himself from being a CEO again and that he and his staff will run the Auburn program "very well" next year.

See I don't know if this is BS or not.  Because again...

I thought last year he was focusing on just the offense? That's why we hired former coach/defensive jeanus Will Muschomp?  I know through Sean that he was calling the majority of the plays last season, when he was QB anyways.

So was he actively involved in the offense but not prepared?
