AU thoughts week 7!
« on: October 15, 2015, 10:33:35 PM »
First half play calling was nice. Called to SWs strengths and kept the run with Barber.
Had two nice short crossing routes that did well. Never saw them again.

Second half, I reckon Gus let Rhett call plays.

Defense. Mincy stunk it up again, except for one nice play. Uh I mean Jones.
I hope Adams is OK. He's all we got.

Hell we got out of Kentucky with a win. I have now idea how good or bad we are.

I did drink much beer though!

On to week 8!

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Townhall's gonna be pissed.

Glad we got the win.  UK came out after half fired the fuck up.  That and some head scratching offensive play calls gave them a ton of momentum.  We survived on the road against a better than average UK team whose QB had a pretty good night.

I think you are onto something with play calling in re to Gus and Lashlee. There are obvious contrasts at different places in the game. You can almost tell when Gus is doing his thing and when he lets Rhett play for a little bit. First half was something special on O.

Our D is still Swiss cheese in the middle. I do like the aggressiveness from the back 4 even giving up 350 in the air. We got a pass rush when it mattered.

Baby steps.

Kentucky is a decent team. They will go bowling. When towles is on, he is very good and accurate. They have good lb'ers and wr's.

Common theme...play calling.  We route this team if they don't rein in white from mid second quarter on.  This kid is a baller.  Let him go.  But every comment..every post is play calling.  Nothing to lose Gus.  Let him go.

Auburn surprised me in the first half...second half? No surprise. Thank goodness the second half team didn't show up early or we would've still been 0-fer in the SEC. Btw, Kentucky's LB (#42) that kid will be playing on Sunday's, he's better than any linebacker we have...hell, better than anyone we have on defense, not named Carl Lawson.
Either Kentucky is becoming a SEC East Powerhouse or Auburn's defense is absolute shit in pass coverage...I'm leaning towards a little of both.

One more thing, does Under Armour not make a long sleeve form fitting shirt to wear under the shoulder pads? I'm tired of seeing our DBs looking like they're wearing garbage bags under their pads...they do play like garbage...so, I guess it fits. Except from Carlton Davis, he did pretty good, but I'm giving him a pass because he's a true freshman and hasn't learned to play like garbage yet.

I just thought it was a Trovon Reed thing, to wear a garbage bag under his pads, but tonight I saw most our DBs wearing them...I guess they were paying tribute to Reed? I don't know.

Have to move Towles but then we lose outside containment from our linebacking play-why it stresses our coverage and forces them to make so many stops.

Playcalling good in first half, mostly abysmal in second.
The flanker around call for whomever is in the slot is overused and has killed an untold number of productive drives. We fool no one with a naked screen-no blocking!
Where is the wheel or TE drag when our kid is staring down a receiver near the flag?

Thank God for Barber's hardnosed running. O-line had a decent night against some space eaters that we are in dire need of.

Carlton Davis looked promising as did Tony Stevens.

A few random thoughts.

#winning  4-2  First SEC win.  Woot

No...this D is not good.  Can't sugarcoat it.  However, they did do more things to create pressure and it worked in some crucial situations.

Countess is all in or completely checked oiut.  Penthouse or outhouse.  Can't add to that.

If Rudi Ford is facing someone not named Leonard...he's bad ass.  And yes...Carlton Davis will be on everyone's preseason watch lists next year.

Gushlee continues to bewilder with the play killing.  100% better for much of the first half.  Hey...we do have routes other than bubbles and bombs.  And they work.  And you have a QB that can hit receivers.  And receivers that can run those routes.

Ricarco = The Man

Mack = Senile Old Fart.  He makes Verne sound like Keith Jackson.  For the love of all that's right and holy, get him out of the booth.  But then, ESPN kept Lou Holthzph around forever.

There. Some of y'all need to stock up on the above to get through this season. We are growing and progressing. Best game as a team all season. Not perfect, far from it, but getting better.

Barber is a baaaaaaaad man with the rock in his hands.

KerryonMyWaywardSon is a emerging as a utility talent. Glad to see him get the ball.

Sean White may not be the tallest but he fires the pill and doesn't let mental mistakes derail him.

We are bowling this year. Next year, we take a closer step to prominence.

Chill, my brothers. And War Eagle!

I feel honored that you borrowed "Gushlee." It has kutzpah or something like it don't you agree?

I'm with you on cutting White loose. What's to lose?

Saw a postgame pic of the kid celebrating with some fans or maybe family that traveled up. We might be irrelevant to the rest of the college football world but he looked as happy as if he just brought down New England.

Pros:

Running Game - its there. A mix of Barber pounding, and KJ slashing is the formula. Go with it.
OL is getting better in Road Grading
WR's stepped up
DB's are ball hawking more
Buck position is good with the former LB and Cowart had his moments as well last night
Sean White is a baller - he and Ricardo seem to be frick n frack already
Playcalling was better - in general
Duke is gone and the team seemed to have pep (coincidence)
Gus had a look on his face I havent seen a good while - our whole sideline had a different atmosphere to it
Countess is brilliant at times - all the potential in the world
Kentucky is better than MSU to me. We play like we did last night against MSU and we win.

Cons:

Interior DL is pathetic
MLB is ALWAYS out of place and looks Jake-esque at times
DB and LB coverage in general across the middle of the field is more porous than spongebob
Pass protection on the OL is still avg but is better than it was 5 weeks ago
Do we have a TE?? Like, all year?
Its obvious Lashlee is becoming a liability at times - inconsistent is an understatement
Penalties, especially giant ones on D with PI at very bad times
Where has trigga trey gone?
Countess looks full tard at times
JJ had an opportunity on one play, and nutted up drawing a false start...sheesh

Agree with most of this, but the OL was pass blocking at a much higher level last night than we've seen all season.  White had time in the first half to make a damn sammich sometimes.

I would only add that the thoughts thread this week seems better. And not just because of the win. It started out stronger. As bad as I hate to compliment CCtAU, he's doing a better job apparently with this thread, as I noticed the difference.

We had a sharp and concise start. Not TL;dr. I can't pinpoint what's different but nice job.

I saw improvement and that is all I could really ask for. The offense looked much more in tune even when Louis lost one of his contacts. Sean White is our QB, no question. Yes, like many has already said, the middle of the AU defense needs some help fo sho but they even showed improvement.
