Auburn University officials traveled to a Chicago elementary school today to surprise a second grade class that won a school competition by adopting the university.
Students in Quinlan Matthew's class at the New Schmid Elementary School won their annual school-wide competition in June by presenting a project about Auburn University. For the presentation, each student researched academic information, collegiate athletics and traditions. A video of the project quickly went viral and was viewed by thousands through social media.
On Thursday, Auburn officials visited the elementary school and announced plans to support the students' academic growth. In addition, students were invited to visit the college campus during a class trip to Auburn in early September for academic activities and to attend the university's first home football game of the 2015 season.
Former Auburn star athlete and Chicago resident Bo Jackson was also on hand to thank and encourage the students as well as Aubie, the university's popular mascot. In addition, students were shown a video during the visit about New Schmid Elementary School featuring Auburn football player Jonathan Wallace and Aubie.
"We were all touched by these young students' preparation, passion for learning and expression of the Auburn spirit," said Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs. "We're excited to be part of a university that cares enough to bring them to campus for an experience we hope will open doors and show them anything is possible."
