Bama vs. MNC
« on: June 30, 2015, 05:48:48 PM »
Kevin Skrubdinski wrote a piece saying maybe Bama fans' claim that Auburn only cares about beating Bama while all they care about is winning National Champeenships may be true.  Basing it on the fact that right now, the SEC Network is letting the schools themselves choose the programming for a day, deciding what games will be shown.  Auburn's starts tonight at 11:00 p.m. and 3 of the classic games are Iron Bowls while the Turds didn't request any Iron Bowls.  I don't know that it proves anything but it does raise an interesting question.  2010 comes to mind.

I'll say first off, the obvious goal of any team in a Power 5 conference is, and should be to win the MNC.  It's a long shot for any team with the exception of those with the highest payrolls.  Everything has to go right and you have to have some luck along the way.  Auburn's win over Oregon was downright satisfying.  It was satisfying in the sense that as a lifelong Auburn fan, I finally got to experience a season like that. One that ended with my team as the only one left standing and raising the crystal.  Almost got to experience that again in 2013. And I believe this staff has a good chance of getting us back there again. But here's the thing about 2010.

I can sit here and recount 10X the moments from the 28-27 comeback in Tuscaloosa than our win over the Ducks.  I've probably watched a replay of that Iron Bowl 7-8 times.  Even watched one version with Eli Gold doing play by play just to hear him shit his pants at the end.  Maybe watched Oregon once.  Did the Iron Bowl mean more to me?  Damn, that's hard to say. The 2013 Iron Bowl?  Yeah, we lost to FSU later but that season was as fun as any I've ever been through and regardless of what happened after that, the Kick 6 made it a huge success for me.  Especially seeing it live in JHS.

I'm 54.  Seen a ton of Auburn foosballz in my lifetime.  Experienced a MNC.  Hope we get another.  But college football...Auburn football is about tradition.  Real traditions.  Winning a MNC didn't make me any more or less a fan of my alma tomater.  There is no game, no sporting event..hell, nothing that I look forward to more than the Iron Bowl.  Nothing stresses me out more.  Nothing keeps me on the edge of my seat for 3+ hours.  And if we win, nothing is more satisfying.  Well, outside of a stiff drink and a good blow job.  But I guess that goes without saying.

Iron Bowl or MNC?  What say you?

If we lost the Iron Bowl but still won the MNC, I'd be mad.

When we lost to FSU, I was disappointed.

I think that's the difference, to me at least.

It's a product of your age.  Bear still lives in your head.  The 70s are real to you. Beating Alabama means so much because of that nine year span where we didn't. Where we were treated like second class citizens. Beating them is a "fuck you" to every grocery bagger and oil changer who ever gave us shit.

Our kids? Not so much.  Over the last 30 years we beat them more often than not.  My kids want to beat Alabama, yeah.  But it's not THE goal.  My youngest said something not too long ago about Auburn "usually" beating them.   In her mind it's not a big upset if we do.  It's just part of the path to Atlanta. She'd rather go to the SEC-CG than the iron bowl.

Fuck scarbinsky.  He has to pander sometimes.  When he does it's sickening.

If the question is whether I would prefer an Iron Bowl win or a natty, I'll take the natty every time. Where would I rather be or what I would prefer to watch is a different question and makes it apples vs oranges. It's hard to beat the Iron Bowl environment.

I guess I've  attended less than ten IB's. Bar's last in bham was my first. 89 and 13 were the best I've ever been to and I can't imagine a natty being more electrifying. But I've never been to a natty.

Only been to one SEC champ and pre playoff, I would've chosen to attend that over a natty.

The playoff is a game changer re: what I'd rather attend.

But in the end, I want championships. That's why I spend big bucks to support AU athletics. Anonymously.

I bought the DVD of the 2010 Iron Bowl. Did not buy the DVD of the game against Oregon.

Pretty much sums it up for me.  I'm of the "1-11 season and the 1 is the Iron Bowl and I'm happy" crowd.

WT mentioned the 89' Iron Bowl.  Was present and accounted for.  Greatest game I've ever witnessed and most likely always will be.  First time we ever got Bama in JHS.  Top ranked Turds.  If you weren't there, you can't grasp the concept that this was the loudest crowd at any sports venue...evah!  Heard later that the sideline announcers on the telecast said they had been to every venue in sports and this was off the charts.  Couldn't hear themselves talk.  It could be 2nd quarter....Bama with the ball at their own 36....2nd and 7....6 point game.  About as mundane a situation as you can get in a football game.  The Bama QB is calling time out because he can't fucking hear.  This was 4 hours of mayhem and we WERE NOT GOING TO LOSE!!!!  This is the Iron Bowl. This is years of frustration.  This is "You're in our house now, bitch."

No MNC game could ever match that.  And if Bama fans want to hold on to the "I'd rather win a MNC"...than an atmosphere like that...the best rivalry in all of sports...period.  Then YOU....DON'T....GET...IT.

I'm sorry, and I know my claim to AU is not as complete as yours because I didn't attend there but this attitude upsets me greatly.

Until we -- as a whole -- stop basing our entire existence on how we fare against those disease-riddled fucks (and yes I do know Mr. Irony) we are doomed to perpetually be the "little brother" they claim us to be.

1-11 SUCKS.  Beating them is some consolation, but that's all.  If we'd beaten Alabama the year we went 3-9 it wouldn't have changed anything for me.  I'd still hate it just as much.

We have to reach the point to where the Alabama game is meaningful for state pride, but in the greater scheme of things it's only a single piece in the greater whole we are trying to create.

Win 12 games, go the SEC Championship and play for the title but lose to Alabama vs. have no shot at the SEC or NCG but beat them?  It's a no brainer.  Lose.  Lose to them but take the bigger prize.

Until and unless they stop meaning more than that to us, we are what they say we are.

That said, Scarbinsky's column is dumber than a dog turd with tapeworms roiling around in it.

Those games were chosen because of what they represent.  If I'm chosing the greatest games in AU history there are some of the Iron Bowls in there, yeah.  1972 because they were supposed to be invincible and we were supposed to be nothing, but we beat them. Beat them in one of the most incredible finishes in college football history.  1982 because they'd cheated their way to a nine-year string that was on the verge of breaking our football program forever.  That win is important NOT because we beat them necessarily, but because of the turning point it represented for the program as we went on to become the Team of the 80s.  Kick Six because we beat them, but NOT just because we beat those dickholes.  Because of what that win brought to us (SEC Championship, shot at the NC) and because it was, again, one of the most incredible finishes in college football history.

Beyond that?  I'd rather see LSU in 1994. FSU in the 80s when Fullwood was there.  The win over LSU in 2006 -- hardest hitting game I've ever seen.  Georgia in 2013 and again the year Courtney recovered the fumble in the endzone to set up a win.  LSU in 2004.  Tennessee in 2004. UT when Ben Tate trucked Eric Berry.  Florida with Damon Duvall. Florida with Wes Byrum.  So many games from the 80s.  Ga. Tech.  Bo/Tommie Agee mauling Maryland.... and so on.

I want to beat Alabama, but it's not the alpha and omega -- nor should it be.

I lived through the 70's, was prolly easier cause I lived in Opelika and was less turd fans.

I liked the 2010 and 2013 turd games, broke their hearts, 2010 especially early in the game they just knew they had ended our season.

I'd much rather see us on the big stage. 2010 will be a season I will never forget, was lucky enough to attend 4 games that year. You knew when we went up 21 in the second 1/2 on SC that we were going to the MNC. A feeling I had never had. I tried like a mofo to get tickets to Glendale.
