Georgia has dismissed yet another defensive back, this time over an apparent misdemeanor shoplifting charge.
Per Dawgs247, Mark Richt announced Sunday night that freshman cornerback Shaquille Jones is no longer with the team. Jones was a three-star recruit in the Bulldogs' class of 2014 who had appeared in one game this season.
Though Richt's announcement did not give a reason for the dismissal, Athens-Clarke County court records showed a Shaquiile Jones from Jones' hometown of Merritt Island, Fla., was arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with misdemeanor theft. The Athens Banner-Herald reported Monday that Jones is alleged to have stolen $43 worth of automotive merchandise from an area Wal-Mart.
Jones was booked into Clarke County jail and released after posting $1,500 bond.
"We have certain expectations and standards that we require of all our players," Richt said in the announcement. "When those expectations and standards are not met, the opportunity to be a part of our program is sacrificed.â€
Already dealing with a numbers issue after multiple off-season transfers, the Georgia secondary now faces further challenges, as Dawgs247's Gentry Estes explains:
[Jones] becomes the third defensive back lost by the Bulldogs in the past week. Sheldon Dawson was dismissed from the team to start this past week, while Rico Johnson's career was sadly cut short by the discovery of a spinal condition that made it unsafe for him to play.
UGA has moved wide receiver Brendan Langley back to cornerback.
