Stealing Signals Could Doom Auburn Football’s Playoff Chances

Technically, it’s not against the rules to steal signals. But if you have been accused twice in the past year, it could turn into an ugly nightmare for your team.

At halftime during their game against the Auburn Tigers, Kansas State Wildcats head coach Bill Snyder said to ESPN reporter Samantha Ponder that Auburn was stealing their signals and that they would have to change them up. Auburn won the sloppy game 20-14. Even though it’s not against the rules to steal signals, it’s considered a low blow in the college football world and could weigh in as a disadvantage when it comes time to decide which teams are going to the playoffs.

This isn’t the first time Auburn has been accused of stealing signals. During the BCS Championship game last year, Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher accused the Tigers of stealing their signals. The Seminoles claimed they had to make adjustments to their signals throughout the game. Florida State won 34-31 and became national champions.

Auburn head coach Gus Malzhan awkwardly rebuked Snyder’s claims to signal stealing by saying a combination of “nos” and “nahs”. He didn’t elaborate on the issue, indicating that he wanted to change the subject fast. Instead of sticking up for his players, he dismissed the issue quickly, leading many to believe that he was indeed aware of the signal stealing, and did nothing about it. Even though it’s up to Kansas State to make sure that their signals are covert, they shouldn’t have to worry about another team blatantly stealing them. It’s more of an ethics issue.

Ultimately, if Auburn is considered for the playoff games, the signal stealing will go against them. The Playoff Committee will take note of the Tigers’ sneaky tactics, and if they are in close competition with another team for a spot in the playoffs they could be ousted based on the negative press from allegations of stealing signals twice.

Auburn needs to think again if they are considering taking any more signals while playing other teams.

Although not technically illegal, Lord Saybinz has said at some point in the past that it was unsafe and if Auburn plays Auburn fast in any more games it could hurt their playoff chances if in a close race with other teams.

On defense, you shouldn't scout a team to know what they are going to do on offense and avoid picking up on any tendencies of a QB checking off on the run or pass? You shouldn't force a team into a play call that you want them to make based on your alignment or coverage look. And no one should try to disguise their defense to get an offense to run one play, while you switch post snap to a different coverage.

On offense, you should never check off based on how a defense is aligned, because the offense is "stealing" a defenses strategy pre-snap.

This is stupid. For all we know, this is what Snyder meant...that Auburn had done a good job of scouting and knowing what the offense would check off to based on certain looks. They needed to change those. And the accusation last year was what a camera recorded from a kid coming off the field that was frustrated. It could be the same as a kid saying "The fucking refs won't call holding and he clearly saw it". Nothing more was said to my knowledge.

The argument that "no" or "nah" isn't an acceptable response to a baseless accusation is almost as dumb as the idea that a defense should studiously avoid noticing obvious calls.

As for the BCS game, I have no idea if AU was stealing signals or not.  It looked to me that (And most analysts said as well) that it was a simple matter in the first half of them having Winston take 5 step drops or hold it longer to try and go down field.  Our D line was getting off the ball and getting to Captain Crablegs. In the 2nd half, they used quicker drops, shorter throws and had success.  Meaning they made adjustments.  As for the signals, you had over a month to prepare for one game.  One game in which you knew full well a former coach would be standing across from you on the Auburn sideline and in a game for all the marbles.  And you didn't think it would be a good idea to switch things up?

In a day and age where the Power 5 is getting more autonomy, is there any reason why teams can't use the speakers in helmets like the NFL does?  That would really eliminate this "they stole our signals" bullshit.  I mean, if you regulate it like the NFL does, what's the argument against it?
