Really liking Simpson and East these days. Simpson is the extended version of Waylon without that rich baritone but he's not afraid to tackle anything while East has that soulful, gospel quality ala THE Band which really makes me like his style. Hope he holds true.

Sturgill Simpson was a fan of Ben Hoffman (the comedian behind the Wheeler Walker character) who hooked him up with his superproducer, Dave Cobb. Cobb is the guy behind every country artist worth a shit in my opinion in the last couple of years. Sturgill, Jason Isbell, Chris Stapelton, and Shooter Jennings. Which is why, like I said, the humor is a bonus to actually a great record.

So sort of back on topic.  (But the Puss In Boots video was country art at it's best)  ESPN's Ryen Russillo is my favorite radio sports personality.  Won't go into the reasons because it's not relevant here.  But he switches up co-hosts and for the last couple of weeks, he's had a guy named Jason Fitz working with him.  Really good duo.  But Fitz is a unique character.  He's done a lot of shit including touring for a long time as the fiddle player for country artists, "The Band Perry".  Now he's in sports talk. 

Background out of the way...he talks a ton about the music industry and some of the stuff he says is eye opening.  He's brutally honest about people in the industry and today, Russillo had a segment where he took rapid fire caller questions about it.  People asked all kinds of questions like who is the hottest country babe out there.  He said most would say Carrie Underwood but Kasey Musgraves is much hotter than Carrie.  "What country artist would you punch in the face?"  Without a doubt, Alan Jackson.  Huge asshole!  Again, brutally honest.

But one caller tried to call out the current state of country as many of you have.  "Why has country become nothing more than pop music?  Why has everyone sold out and nobody plays music like Waylon and Willie and Hank anymore?"  His answer was exactly what I've harped on time and time again.  Fitz told the guy, "Because you won't buy it.  You won't request it.  You won't listen to it."  Radio stations don't play it because nobody listens to it.  If nobody's listening, sponsors don't buy ads.  Stations shut down.  "Country" changed because they weren't making money anymore playing Willie and Waylon and George and Conway. Let me give you another example from Fitz.  The Band Perry got a Grammy nomination for their rendition of Glen Campbell's, "Gentle on My Mind". Mega hit for Campbell.  The Grammy's recognized their artistry in covering it, but the song didn't make the top 40.  Hence, the general public doesn't want to hear it.

If people actually wanted to hear the old time country and were spending their $$$ on that, artists would play it and stations would play and promote it.  You can complain all you want, but just stop.  Go buy all the George Jones and Earl Thomas Conley and Conway Twitty and the Twitty Birds and Barabara Mandrell and Gatlin Brothers and Oak Ridge Boys etc. you want and put your headphones on and have at it.  That shit is in the past. If you like it, fine.  Music is about your own personal taste anyway. But, until people put their money where their mouth is and quit complaining about the current state of country music, it's not going to change.

I do agree with Snag although I have a different take on it. 

Insofar as country music, the genre was taken over by doucheholes in the 80s pretty much.  I didn't really care for country but I could listen to and enjoy some of the stuff from Charlie Daniels, Merle and the old guard.  It was never my thing, but I respected and appreciated it.  Fact of the matter, I ran a weekend show on AM radio that was all country for about a year in 1980-81 and was exposed directly to the turn from bluegrass/opry ragged edged country to the more polished corporate shit.  There was a definite line in the sand between what the different camps of listeners wanted us to play and wanted to hear.  Nobody was happier than I was when we switched to Top 40 and I got to start playing Commodores, KISS, REO, Zep...

Country definitely took a douche turn with Kenny Rogers and the hokey shit spawned from the Urban Cowboy movie.  Some of that, even, was palatable though. 

Then at some point "country" music became Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt, Marty Stuart and those clowns. I loathe Garth Brooks with many of my being fibers. 

Now?  It's a pathetic wasteland populated by skeevy fraudulent douchenozzles.  Far, far too many of the people who listen to it are mouthbreathing, strap-T, flip flop and sunglass wearing doubledouches.  I'll concede that there is a fairly large trash whore hot contingent of women who congregate around the genre so that's a positive, but I'm not necessarily fond of having sex with woohoo girls who don't remember to take their gum out and smell like boubon and cigarettes. 

But as Snaggle's post pointed out, this is the crowd that buys country music and attends country concerts. 

Those of us who appreciate good music and musicianship are driven to other genres or to nostalgia-type acts.  (Asia sounded terrible, Journey was good the other night). 

As for the stuff Chizad posted?  That's disgraceful.  Just because a dumbass adds a new layer of vulgarity to the mix does not a genius make. That's terrible, unfunny shit.  He can LOL all he wants, but there WILL come a time that he, as a parent, will reject that kind of infantile trash, be embarrassed that he ever thought it funny or cool, and hope that his children don't find out about it. 

It's worth noting that rap/hip hop is also on its deathbed, having been taken over by a steady stream of talentless thugs whose only real talent appears to be the use of profanity.  There's virtually no creativity, no musicianship, nothing but relentless banging ignorant noise.  I've seen the hideous garbage some of you have posted here as evidence that the genre still has something to say, but it's just not there.  That horrific turd Little Dickhole fits right in with the really shitty Motherfucker stuff posted in this thread.  Chance "the rapper"?  Bellowing in a screechy out of tune voice is not talent.  We already had that with Biz Markie and that was better. 

The fact that Nelly -- who I once enjoyed as a rapper -- is touring with Florida Georgia Line puts the nail in the coffin of both genres.  Period.

Don't get me wrong there, Chrissie Hynde.  Whether it's the old country or the new pop country, it's never been in my top 5.  Do I like some of it? Yeah, absolutely!  And whether I like the music of a particular artist or not, I love going to a concert and seeing someone put on a great show. But I'll also be the first to admit that while they've tagged the country label on the pop stuff that's out there today, 75% of it bears no resemblance to traditional country.  It's just what the mainstream is eating up and plunking down their cash for.
