AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn University superfan Johnny Richmond, known to many as Mr. Penny, passed away on Wednesday night at his home, according to the Opelika Auburn News.

Richmond, a custodian and crossing guard at Dean Road Elementary, was beloved in the Auburn community and known for celebrating Tigers touchdowns by doing pushup in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The cause of death has not been released, but Richmond's wife, Lula, said his health had been declining for months. In 2012, Richmond suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He later said he survived the incident thanks to God and was grateful to be alive, reports WSFA.

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.' That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.'

This has a way of speeding up your demise.

Generally in a much quicker fashion than this.

We would have been attending 103 funerals in November.
