Georgia safety Tray Matthews is on the search for a new school, and the defensive back might have an eye on Auburn.
Bulldogs coach Mark Richt dismissed Matthews on Tuesday in a release by the school.
"We are trying to make room for guys who want to do things right," Richt said.
Matthews, who started six games last season for the Bulldogs as a true freshman but was arrested in the offseason on three counts of theft, tweeted a goodbye to Georgia fans and indicated he was contemplating a transfer to either Auburn or Louisville.
Auburn was a finalist for Matthews in the 2013 recruiting class.
Matthews, a 6-foot, 200-pound native of Newnan, Ga., who had 36 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble as a free safety for the Bulldogs last season, had been expected to be a key member of Georgia's secondary going forward.
And he also played a central role in one of the biggest plays of Auburn's season. A starter against the Tigers, Matthews made 12 tackles in the game, but he was also heavily involved in Nick Marshall's famous Prayer in Jordan-Hare to Ricardo Louis. In coverage on Louis, Matthews tried to make a play on the ball, but fellow safety Josh Harvey-Clemons tipped the ball into the air and into Louis's hands.
Matthews was arrested in March for misdemeanor theft by deception, along with three other teammates, for cashing checks from the UGA Athletic Association with their mobile app, then immediately cashing them again at a convenience store, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Due to his dismissal, Matthews can transfer to any school, but he would still have to sit out next season, then have three years of eligibility at his new school.
Two former Georgia defensive backs, Harvey-Clemons and cornerback Shaq Wiggins, have already transferred to Louisville this offseason. Former Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who recruited all three players, now holds the same position under Bobby Petrino in Louisville.
