SECond Look video: Southwest Alabama a 'big battleground' for Tide, Tigers
SECond Look: 'Big battleground' for Alabama, AuburnAL.com's Mark Heim and Mike Herndon talk about the "dogfights" in a fertile recruiting ground for the Alabama and Auburn football programs.

The Alabama Crimson Tide was on a recruiting roll in southwest Alabama until three players out of Mobile signed with the Auburn Tigers in 2014.

A comment by one of those players headed to Auburn gets the discussion going in our new "SECond Look" video report from AL.com's Mark Heim (standing in for Randy Kennedy) and Mike Herndon.

"Auburn owns Mobile," said Tre Williams, the five-star linebacker from St. Paul's Episcopal. "They will own Mobile until we leave."

Herndon says in our video, "I would imagine that caught the attention of a lot of Alabama fans who are accustomed to pulling pretty much whoever they want out of here. I think he may have overstated it a little bit, but the point is well taken. Auburn has certainly got a presence here now."

Heim and Herndon go on to talk about past and future recruiting in the area.

"It's going to be a big battleground for those schools from here on out," Herndon says.

I like how Heim & Herndon and pretty much the rest of AL.com scoff at this and are basically ridiculing the kid for saying it.

Finebaum had to post "Paging coach Saban" (Yuck yuck).

Yep. It's all a big joke to them. What they fail to mention is that there was a time that AU did own Mobile. It's not like UA has owned it forever. They thought they'd own it from now on, since Saban.

Gus is back and wins Mobile his first year. Well, not Gus, but his staff. Truth be known, DC can own Mobile. He has that much influence in the area and NW Fl. He would get a haul from the area if he were at Tuskegee Institute.

I like Tre's spunk but AU doesn't own it. Don't forget LSU, UF and FSU either. They've pulled a lot of talent from Mobile. Recruiters tend to lump Pensacola into the Mobile recruiting area and the rest of SW Al.

They suck.

They also forget that for most of Dye and Tuberville (and even Bowden)'s years Auburn dominated the Mobile area.

Scott Bolton
Lawyer Tillman
Pat Washington
DeMarco McNeill
David King
Leo Carson
Ron Middleton
Tracy Turner
Dowe Aughtman
Anthony Mix
Walter Reeves

Just a few of the names from the Mobile area that I can think of off the top of my head.

Alabama "owning" Mobile is a fairly recent and short-lived thing.  During the Shula, DuBose, Franchione, Price years Auburn was so dominant in south Alabama that they didn't really bother even coming down here.
