Copyright Law Question for the Gurus

How hard is it to obtain licenses and pay royalty fees without using an agency like Harry Fox or a website like Limelight?

It's pissing me off that I have to pay $26/song just to have Limelight do some paperwork for me.

Do a compilation on an SR form (essentially combining several songs) which will give you protection for the number of songs you send for the cost of one ($30now?). 

It's yours whether or not u send it in to copyright ofc, you just have to prove it.  I'm sure you've heard of poor man's method but with the digital age, it couldn't hurt to email yourself a copy. 

Or, save yourself the effort and $ by giving up on the dream of becoming a hit maker like I did many years ago and pursue other avenues to fame.  I'm sure you have other means of expressing your artistic side. Gay porn? Polka? The list goes on, you just have to find your reason for being born.

It's for cover songs.  CDBaby, Amazon, and iTunes won't allow me to upload anything unless I provide info about licensing with other people's work.  No big deal, and I'm happy to give a percentage to the original writers as I would hope others would do the same for me.

But paying $13 for a digital upload and then $13 for a hard copy is a little much per song if you ask me.  I'd rather not make whoever owns Limelight rich.

I can't remember who we used when we did a cover or two, but it wasn't nearly that expensive.  I'll look and see if I can find it.
