Now that Cam Newton's third season in the NFL is in the books and the former Auburn star has established himself as the Carolina Panthers' franchise quarterback, the Tigers' most famous student faces a pivotal year in his career. Newton, who has made two Pro Bowls and led the Panthers to an NFC South title last year, is coming up on the end of a 4-year, $22-million contract that has a team option for a fifth year.
And that means the Panthers will likely be looking to lock up Newton with a new deal soon, possibly during the 2014 offseason. Newton told guest host Mike Florio on The Dan Patrick Show Monday that he's not focused on his contract situation.
"I’m not worried about contract discussions right now," Newton said. "My main focus is just becoming the better player I can become."
Florio, in light of the recent revelation that Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson would consider holding out to force his team's hand in contract negotiations, also asked Newton if the possibility of a holdout was on the table.
"Absolutely not," Newton said. "Being the leader of this team, I don’t think that would be a good look for me." Now, as Newton steers himself toward a May graduation from Auburn, the big quarterback looks to trying to keep Carolina moving forward in a division that normally experiences a battle for the top spot.
"Going into my fourth year, I want to make that leap, make that stride to be a marquee quarterback in this league," Newton told Florio.
