The DEEP South's Oldest Rivalry
« on: November 11, 2013, 10:52:39 AM »
I was just thinking, why do we have that qualifier?

We're not just the "South's Oldest Rivalry", we're the "DEEP South's Oldest Rivalry".

The "South's Oldest Rivalry" is Virginia vs. North Carolina.

BUT NOT SO FAST, MY FRIEND!

From the UVA-UNC games' wiki page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South%27s_Oldest_Rivalry
Quote
The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry

The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry (Auburn-Georgia) may eventually surpass "South's Oldest Rivalry" (UNC-Virginia) in number of games played due to the conference expansion of the SEC and ACC conferences. With the possibility of a same-season rematch in the SEC Championship, Auburn and Georgia can play a second game in the same season; North Carolina and Virginia, however, are in the same division of the ACC, making a similar North Carolina vs. Virginia ACC Championship matchup impossible. Currently the UVA-UNC series leads the AUB-UGA series by one game. However, because the UVA-UNC series kept playing through World War II, it will be very difficult for AUB-UGA to surpass the rivalry in consecutive years played. Chronologically, Auburn-Georgia is the oldest rivalry in the South. Auburn-Georgia was first played on February 20, 1892. UNC-Virginia was first played eight months and three days later on October 22, 1892.[6]

Despite us having played for longer, apparently they squeezed two more games in against eachother somewhere along the line back in the late 1800s, early 1900s, so I guess that makes them a longer running rivalry, numerically, but not chronologically.

Anyway, I say all of that to say, for those that don't realize it,  that the series is currently dead even, despite us losing six out of the last seven. The series currently stands at 54-54-8.

Interesting. I did not know that.

I take it since API was heavily involved in training engineers for the war effort, there wasn't much interest in football. Learn something new every day.

So, if we take care of bidnezz in the DEEP South's Oldest Rivalry.....what scandal will rear its ugly head in the 2 weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl?  Grade changing?  Hookers and blow provided to recruits?

There will be some off the wall story that pops up. My guess is a question surrounding the eligibility of a key player.  Marshall?  Mason?  Jake?

If we beat Georgia, there's a beatdow.....err, a scandal coming.  Can you hear it coming?

The wires are quiet.

Mostly because they think we are a joke and won't come within four TDs of them.

Are you insinuating that Jake is not one of our key players?  Do you actually know anything about football or do you just troll message boards acting like you do?  Pffffft...

Please don't let it be Jake.  Please.

What if we cop to it before it comes out? I'm willing to let Jake take one for the team.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Or more likely, they thought this, and thus had no need to sow the necessary seeds. Regretting it now. There may be some sort of Hail Mary "In case of emergency break glass" cardboard scandal, but it'll be sloppy.

At 9-1 (5-1 SEC), the demeanor on campus is far closer to that season than last year's 3-9 mess.

"The teachers' attitudes are better. The bus drivers' attitudes are better," Wright said. "I guess what I'm trying to get at is that everybody's attitude is better. There's not much bad that can come from winning. It's a new day here. We're blessed to be at this point. We just can't wait for the next opportunity."

Saturday's game will be personal in a different way for an Auburn player who wasn't on the sideline for either of its recent losses to Georgia. Tigers quarterback Nick Marshall has played in the series before, though as a defensive back for Georgia in 2011.

He spent last year at Garden City Community College and landed this year at Auburn.

"He's familiar with them, there's no doubt," Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said. "But if he holds true to past experience this year, he doesn't get too high or too low. Not much really rattles him. He stays pretty calm no matter what the moment."

Holy shift.  I forgot about that 92' game.  I was there and one of the fans who couldn't bring myself to leave.  Like the author, I kept thinking, surely the refs are going to come back out and correct this.  (No, and don't call me Shirley)  How do you run a dive play from the two....with 19 seconds left.... and the refs won't allow you to run another play?

I got pissed when the thugs came back from 28-7 at the half (I think in 95 or 96), and left the game when they tied it up. First time ever that I left a game before it ended like that, at least when it was close. Knew it was going into O.T. and now kick meself in the ass. 4 o.t. game--first in SEC history. You may remember it as the game in which Ugga tried to bite Robert Baker's testicles off.

Was at that one too and for some reason, the temperature dropped 12 degrees with each passing overtime.
