Auburn football: QB-turned-safety Frazier switches to wide receiver

AUBURN — A short stint on defense is over for Kiehl Frazier. The former Auburn quarterbackturned-safety is now a wide receiver for the Tigers.

It’s been a season of dramatic changes for Frazier, who changed positions to safety after being eliminated from the quarterback competition in fall camp. He had very few reps on the defensive side and has lined up at quarterback on a handful of occasions, with some handoffs and two carries for three yards.

“I don’t know if I can say there’s not any scenario that would send him back to defense, but he’s definitely going to be heavily on the offensive side,” Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said. “Kiehl gives us that flexibility. He can play in the slot, he can play outside like Kodi Burns kind of did when he ended up making the move. At the same time, you can put him in the backfield, and he’s a run and a pass threat. It’s not like snapping it to a guy that you know can’t throw it. He’s a guy that can run the football and throw the football, so he gives us a lot of versatility.”

Auburn lost receiver Jaylon Denson for the season to a leg injury suffered in the opening drive against LSU. The Tigers were further limited with bigger blocking receivers on Saturday due to a minor injury to C.J. Uzomah, who has not caught a pass since the game-winning touchdown against Mississippi State.

“Kiehl is a big, physical guy. He knows our system. So you can plug him in, and in two weeks’ time, he may not know all the nuances of wide receiver, but he has a good idea of the scheme because he’s played quarterback in it,” Lashlee said. “Kiehl will continue to be a part of what we’re doing out there, and it’ll also be good to get C.J. back.”

Frazier had one reception last season, a 33-yard touchdown catch against ULM on a trick play thrown by receiver Quan Bray. The 6-foot-2, 224-pound junior is now the heaviest active receiver on the Auburn roster and among the tallest.

Frazier had 76 carries for 327 yards with three touchdowns as a freshman in Gus Malzahn’s hurry-up, no-huddle offense.

“We know what we’re getting with Kiehl,” Malzahn said. “He’s a solid guy, he understands our offense, and he’s got a chance to really help us.”

Frazier won the starting quarterback job before the 2012 season but was one of the statistically worst passers in the country before being pulled at halftime against Arkansas in the fifth game of the season. He went 62-for-116 for 753 yards with two touchdowns and eight interceptions with 42 carries for minus-35 yards last season.

Discuss...probably a smarter move for him IMO.

Time to earn it. He' s the biggest, so its time to learn to go across the middle. The way he dances from contact, I don't see this happening, ever.

Another "good Auburn man" taking up a another guy's spot.

Jury is out. maybe he can make a few catches like his predecessor and have the whole AU family gush over him too.

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

So, he ran the wrong way? This could maybe be corrected with something as simple as a wrist compass. And not letting him throw it, of course.

At least his predecessor was willing to block.  If he is willing to do that and make the opposing D-coord take 10 minutes out of practice to remind his D-backs that they might need to expect some sort of double pass when he's on the field he might be worth something.

I recall watching a practice in 2011 and they ran a play several times where the QB would come down the line to the left and flip it out to a receiver like a reverse, but the receiver immediately threw it to another WR going down the right side.  They were using either Uzomabaden or Fulse to throw the pass.  One of them played some QB in high school.  Can't recall which one.  I say that because I know they've got it in the playbook, but the question is:

A.) Do you use one of those two and keep the element of surprise, or:

2.) Do you use Klapeel when the defense would be watching for some trickeration since he's a former QB, or:

III.) Would it be a wasted play to use Kwajile since he can't hit the broad side of my ass from 5 yards away?

Things to ponder....

It was Uzimota

a)  It should work either way if Kaleel is used at WR more anyway

Deux) The defense would probably be looking for the pick anyway.

F) Probably

Well good for you. Yes he did catch it, but there were other times during the year that he was not catching or getting open. Lucky for us we had Cam and did not need EERY tool in the shed.

Times are different now. If Kadrila can do the job, then great. I just don't feel we need another "Auburn Man" taking the place of someone who can do the job.

Time will tell. One thing is for certain, he won;t get the chance to be in the right place at the right time during a national championship game this year!

Kodi was one hell of an athlete.  I think Keeheel is too. Just not suited for QB at this level any more than Kodi was.  But, letting him run with the WR group means nothing more to me than the corches seeing if he might be able to help them.  I'd rather have him there than in the Mildcat.

Of course. But with him still on offense, it looks like his role in the mildcat is preserved!

The biggest question that begs to be answered is why Kadleeheel was not in the mildcat late in the 4th quarter Saturday night when it was obvious Marshall couldn't run?

I don't think they want him handling the ball in a pressure situation.
