Orange is the New Black

Anyone checked this out on Netflix yet?

I just finished episode 3.  It is a great show.  Lots of tits too including Donna's from That 70s Show.

I'm not sure how to describe the show.  It has a comedic feel to it, but the show is rather serious.

A run-of-the-mill blonde valley girl who is very sweet and cute but says the word fuck a lot got involved in a lesbian relationship right after college.  It was a rebellious adventure, and it turns out, the girl she was sleeping with was involved in an international drug smuggling operation.  The cute blonde girl decides to smuggle cash once and not too long afterwards, she gets out of the lesbian relationship.  She then goes on to be a typical sweet hot chick dating some nice guy and they have a really nice house and are going to get married.

Then ten years later, the drug operation gets busted and they connect the girl to it.  Statute of limitations is 12 years.  She has to serve 15 months in a federal prison.

Lots of memorable characters.  Some funny moments.  Some deep moments.  Good show.  I highly recommend it.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Really good show...Netflix is becoming a major player in the exclusive Originals type series. House of Cards was another really good series...and yes the end of Season 1 was a shocker and I loved it. That blonde girl is a pretty good actress.

SPOILERS

Perfect ending.  I was all ready to come on here and write a huge essay on how much I hated Piper Chapman, but she got exactly what she deserved.  Hopefully Larry will learn from this event.  He was a good guy, but he was such a lame ass sissy.

The show doesn't need a second season.  There were a few story lines that were left open, but they didn't really matter.  Red lost her kitchen.  The Mendez/Bennett/Daya drama is probably muddy and complicated, but who really cares if Bennett sticks around for the baby?  He's very much like Larry, so he'll probably give in to whatever Daya wants and take her in as soon as she gets out.

Apparently this show is based on a book which is based on a true story?

Here they are:

This show was better and way, way more scary when it was called Oz and featured detective Elliot Stabler's swinging junk.

Even the characters are essentially the same.

Piper is Beecher
Prepon is Keller
Crazy Eyes is Adabisi
Lyonne is oreilly
The boss dude is McManus
Fat black poet is fat black poet

And so on and so forth.

Haven't much cared for piper chapman in anything else she's been in but I do like her here.

Only watched four episodes but I've seen all these stories before. On Oz.

Never saw Oz.

Suggest you binge watch it.  The first few seasons in particular were an assault on the senses.

Never saw Oz.

Back to the Oz comparisons...

Having seen the season finale now, I have to say it's like the people who wrote this just watched Oz and changed all the people to be women.

Protagonist is a regular person, not a career criminal, unsuited for prison life. Check.
Protagonist becomes suited for prison life. Check.
Kitchen drama? Check.
Guards screwing each other and prisoners?  Check.
Protagonist not being gay, but then being gay, but then not?  Check.
Hooch brewing in a toilet. Check.
Principled old prisoners? Check.
Play/pageant where some killing's gonna go down?  Check.
Dog training? Check.
Killing set up by redneck white?  Check.
Protagonist who's gonna have a chance, goes crazy and does a bad thing. Check.

It's like a total rip of five seasons of Oz.  I'm actually wondering if the Piper person who wrote the book just sat down, watched Oz and made the entire thing up based on what she saw on TV.

Granted the characters were somewhat interesting. But unlike Oz, they kept things toned down and sort of muted.  Oz was hardcore.  Made me want to stay out of prison for sure.

I saw where somebody said the finale was "shocking."   I'd really like to know why.  What was so shocking?

It was decent.  The stories were good.  But it never skated far enough off the edge.

Watch Oz.  Then check back with me.
