Hanging Mr Cooper
« on: August 01, 2013, 01:47:52 PM »
Been watching ESPN today. The pious freak out because Riley Cooper uttered the only word in the English language (white) people aren't allowed to say in anger at a redneck concert is disgusting and self serving.

Having to apologize is asinine. Having multiple round table discussions and rants from the al Sharpton of sports (Stephen smith) is outrageous.

The somber faces of mortensen, Davis, mcshay and the angry mug of herm is pathetic.

It's a word.

They can say motherf. Gd. And a thousand other things. But he gets mad says THAT word and they are talking about him being banned from the game.

Ray Lewis killed somebody or participated in a killing. And probably called them worse. The league is full of convicts, drug addicts, wife beaters, thrives, and assorted thugs.

But we are going to chase a white guy for using a word I've heard somebody say almost every day of my life.

We have truly lost our way.

Have to admit I was having the same conversation this morning with several people.  I had on ESPN Radio yesterday afternoon just a an hour or two after the story broke.  Mark Schlereth (sp?) who I usually like to listen to, sounded like his mother had just died or the entire Philadelphia Eagles team had perished in a plane crash. He was somber as he literally apologized on behalf of every non-racist white person, making sure everyone knew that without a doubt, he stood on the side of righteousness and goodness and holiness and non-racistismness.

And as is the norm, the Eagles owner has to issue a statement doing the same and making sure everyone is aware that this particular organization does not condone this type of behavior in any way, shape or form.  Really?  What a surprise.  I thought most teams around the NFL strongly encouraged their white players to use nehgra in casual conversation as often as possible.  I'm shocked.

Look, you call the guy an idiot...fine him...suspend him...whatever...and tell the world "No worries, we got this."  And move on.

Around the Horn just all agreed that Cooper will have to live with this for the rest of his life.

Also, agreeing that its good for him to get counseling much like Michael Vick got counseling for dog fighting.

Haven't heard much on the fact that he seems to have an anger problem.  Right?  I mean, if anything, we should be concerned with the fact that an NFL player was losing his cool and about to get into a fight.  If he hadn't said the word, what would they be saying?  "Oh he's a football player. They're barbaric and fight all the time.  No big deal."

But that's not a problem.  Saying a derogatory term while drunk and pissed off is a life ended.

Of all people, Colin Cowherd, is the voice of reason.  Really not surprising because he loves to go against the grain just to be controversial.  I heard about 10 minutes of his take earlier and he played a little clip of an interview done with Michael Vick, who said he thought he knew Cooper....but maybe he didn't.  Cowherd came back with, "Gee Michael, we thought we knew you...but I guess we didn't...when we found out you were killing and mutilating dogs."

Went on to say athletes and politicians are the two groups that need to tread the lightest when it comes to this type thing and deciding to forgive someone because they are easily the most hypocritical people on earth.  Said Donta Stallworth killed someone and guess what? He's playing in the league.  Started giving more examples when I got back to the office.

Cowherd can be a tool, mostly because he intentionally takes the opposite side of conventional thinking.  Our local station dropped Yahoo and picked up ESPN Radio so we get CC in that time slot when we used to get Tim Brando.  Trust me, that's a winning trade off. Just happy to hear someone on that network be the voice of reason on this issue.

Stephen A. Smith: "Black folks talking amongst ourselves and using the word is entirely different than somebody outside our community." He said to "get over it" and that's just the way that it is.

Skip said: "When it comes out of a white man's mouth, it has crossed a line." And that he didn't think a white man could apologize for using that word.

It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Once again, like most things, I think people jump to extremes where the reasoned reality is somewhere in the middle.

What he did was bad. To yell that at someone in anger, in 2013, from someone as young as he is, that come from a bad place within. To me, that's different than Paula Deen being meta-racist because she talked about one time in her life in 1987 she said the N word. It's different from Zimmerman acting in self defense and race being artificially injected into a situation where it didn't exist.

He should and will lose the respect of his teammates, fans, and employers. The Eagles are even justified in fining him. I don't think any amount of "sensitivity training" can make you not racist, so in my opinion, that's silly. Should he be dismissed from the team? I think that's extreme. Is this worse than Michael Vick mutilating dogs or Ray Lewis being involved in a homicide? Of course not. The faux shock and disgust is wearing thin.

As for discussion of "N-word" itself. Again. Middle ground. It's silly that you have to say "N-word" instead of just saying it. We're adults. It's like a kid saying "the B-word" instead of butt. I can just come out and say fuck, mommy part, faggot, chink, jap, spic, etc. but I'm not comfortable saying that word.

On the other hand, it's just the way it is and it's similarly childish to want to do something just because you're told you can't. Get over it. It's ok for them to, just like it's ok for you to talk shit about your sibling, but no one else can. It's just the way it is. It's not rocket surgery.

I sometimes wonder if you live in a bubble.

My one-time boss, the head of a major corporation used to tell nigra jokes.  It's a freaking word and it's much less offensive than 3/4 of the stuff I hear from people.

Black folks need to get over themselves.  Now.
